NITED A STATES 1 I. much.
I 'rnnr ROBERT B. STANLEY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO T. JOHNSON, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
APPARATUS FOR APPLYING PASTE TO WALL- PAPER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 662,606, dated November 27, 1900.
Application filed June 8, 1900. Serial No. 19,533. (No model.)
To l/U1 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and 5 State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Automatically Pasting Wall-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for auto-.
matically applying paste to wall-paper or the like; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple device of this character of inexpensive construction and reliable in its operation.
WVith this object in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
I will now proceed to describe my invention by reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure l is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same attached by hooks to the end of the paper-hangers table, with a rollof paper in position in the pasting device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the inner face of one of the end plates of the paste-box.
The pastebox l is made, preferably,of sheet metal having end plates 2, provided with recesses 18 and slots 17, and a bottom 3, having a longitudinal depression therein below the lowest part of the paste-cylinder 4:. The ends of said cylinder are provided with studs or gudgeons 5, which normally rest and rotate in two bearing-blocks 6, secured to the inner faces of end plates 2. Said cylinder 4 is preferably hollow,as shown in Fig. 2. Two (or more) brackets 14 are detachably secured, as
shown, to the side of the paste-box adjacent to the table, preferably as shown in Fig. 2. Said brackets form partial supports for a roll of paper, as shown. A metallic rod 10' is preferably inserted through the central opening 5 of the roll of paper and its ends project through the vertical slots 1'7. The function of rod 16 is to hold the roll of paper down upon brackets 1 L when the roll becomes small, as indicated by dotted line in Fig. 2. A roller 5o 7, having circumferential ribs thereon, has
axial gudgeons mounted in blocks 8, secured to end plates 2 in such a position that said ribs are in contact with cylinder 4;. A brush 9 is-arranged parallel and in contact with said roller 7, and the lower portion of said brush is secured in or to a strip 10, which is detachably hung inside the paste-box,by sheetmetal hooks 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said brush is made detachable, so that it may easily be cleaned and to permit the insertion or removal of cylinder I.
In operation the paste-box is partially filled with paste, as indicated in Fig. 2. The roll of paper to be coated is then placed in position, resting partly on cylinder 4 and partly on brackets 14, with rod 16 in slots 17. The free end of the paper is drawn over cylinder 4 and around roller 7, and then back upon the table, as shown. When the paper is pulled, it f rictionally rotates the cylinder, which carries the paste up and between itself and the paper. NVhen the paper in its passage around roller 7 is drawn between said roller and brush 9, the brush smooths and removes any excessive amount of the paste from the paper. The pasted strip is drawn along the table to be cut or trimmed, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for applying paste to wall-paper or the like, comprising, in combination, the paste-box 1, the trough-shaped bottom 3 thereof, the pasting-cylinder 4: mounted in said box, the inclined brackets 14, detachahly secured to one inner side of said-box for partially supporting a roll of paper, the rod 16 for weighting the roll, the slots 17 in the ends of said box for the ends of said rod, corrugated roller 7 rotatably mounted 1n contact with said cylinder, the brush-holder 10, the hooks 12 for attaching the brush-holder to the pastebox, and the brush 9, extending the length of said roller and contacting with a portion thereof; all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. STANLEY.
