ROBERT MCKAY AND FRANK R. WELTON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN,
ASSIGNORS TO THE MCKENNEY BUTTON FASTENING COMPANY OF SAME PLACE.
STAPLE-SETTING MAHIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,495, dated November 27,
Application led December 18, 1899. `erial No. 740,722. (No model.)
To fl/Z Loh/0m t may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT MOKAY and FRANK R. WELroN, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastener- Setting or Stay Machines; and l declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact.- description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and` use the same, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this 'specication Our present invention is designed to provide an improved staple or fastener setting machine, the same being more specifically adapted for a stay-machine employing a twopronged fastening. i
Our invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices and appliances hereinafter specified and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the casing of the die-spindle. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the plunger. Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line 4 4:, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the lower extremity of the fastener-holding arm.
Certain features of the machine embodied in the drawings and specification submitted herewith are also embraced in a certain application for a button-setting machine, Serial No. 740,721, tiled by us December 1S, 1899, the button feeding and holding mechanism embodied in the accompanying application for a button-setting machine, together with other parts thereof, being in this instance omitted and certain additional features-being incorporated herewith to adapt the machine more particularly for a stay-machine or a machine especially designed simply for setingthe fastenings on different kinds of work, fortstaying seams on different kinds of work, and for analogous uses, such a machine being commonly termed a stay-machine.
Accordingly in the drawings, a represents asuitable supporting-frame in which is jourdevice and runway forming no which is a part of the frame CL.
naled a driving-shaft o, provided with a driving-wheel c, driven from any suitable source of power. Upon said shaft is a driving-cam CZ, preferably provided with a cam-groove e. A fastei'ier-hopperis indicated atf, arranged to deliver fastenings to afastener-runway g, constructed with a customary channel or way 13, in which the fasteners pass to position to be engaged with the work. The fastenerhopper, it will be understood, may be provided with any desired feeding device to feed the fasteners to the runway. The feeding special subject-matter of the present invention 'need not be herewith particularly described.
A setting-die is indicated at h and the diespindle at t', provided with a diej. Said spindle has a yielding movement in a plunger 7c, having a reciprocatory movement in a case Z, In our present machine the fasteners are held adjacent to the lower extremity of the diej, when the die descends the prongs projecting downward and the work being located upon the settingdie h, the prongs ofthe fastening being projected through the upper face of the Work against the setting-die therebeneath. To holdv the fasteners, we employ a fastener-holding arm rm, secured to a block n. This block is engaged in a dovetailed bearing or recess p in the plunger 7a, the case Z being formed with an opening at r to permit the engagement of the block with the plunger and to allow the plunger to have a limited movement in said case independent of .the block. A spring o exerts its tension to raise the block until it comes in contact with the case at the upper end of the orifice fr, as at q, the upward movement of the block being limited thereby.
The arm m is pivotally engaged-with. the block, as indicated at s, and is formed toward its upper end with a beveled inner. cont-actface 't to contact with a beveled portion of the case, (indicated at ta) and whereby when the two beveled faces are in contact the arm will be thrown ontward,as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, so that its lower extremity will further descent of The spindle t' has a limited movebe out of the way of the the die.
ment only in the plunger 7c, permitted by ay spring 'w in the plunger, which may be given any suitable tension by means of a screw in the top of the plunger. It will be understood that the die-spindle travels with the plunger. The block n is forced downward with the arm m, secured thereto by the contact of the die upon the head of a fastener located between the die and the lower extremity of said arm. Aspring o, secured to the upper portion of the block n, bears at its lower extremity against the arm m to restore the arm to normal position. It will be perceived that on the upward movement of the spindle and plunger the spring n, secured to the plunger at one extremity and to the block at the other extremity, holds said block, with the arm m,
up against the end of the die j until the upper end of the block strikes against the upper end of the slot r, as at q, whereby the upward movement of the block is stopped, so that when the plunger has reached its limit of upward movement an opening is formed between the diej and the adjacent end of the arm m. The lower extremity of said arm is prefera-bly formed, as indicated in Fig. 5,
with a fork 12, onto which the fastener drops from vthe runway. The dropper is so timed that a fastener will drop at a time when the die-spindle is at its upward limit of movement and when the block carrying the holderarm mis held down by contact with the upper portion q of the slot r, leaving an opening between the lower extremity of the holderarm and the die for the fastener to drop into position on the holder-arm. It will be observed that the arm fm will be carried downward with the block for a sufficient distance to engage the extremities of the prongs of the fastening in the work, after which the arm m will be moved out of the way as the fastening is further driven to clench the prongs in the work.
A fastener is indicated at y. A fastenerdropper is indicated at z. To actuate the spindle and the fastener-dropper, we employ a lever 12, fulcrumed intermediate its extremities, as indicated at 2, the inner end of said lever being provided with a cam-roll 3, engaged in the cam-groove e, as in the accompanying application above referred to. Said lever 12 is constructed and arranged to actuate the die-spindle essentially in the man ner described in said pending application, the forward end thereof being engaged with the spindle. The fastener-dropper a' is made oscillatory, the same being pivotally engaged at its upper end, as at 4, upon the fastener-runway. The lower'v extremity of the dropper is recessed, as indicated at 5, forming two adjacent forks Gand 7 on either side the channel or way 13 of the runway, the latter fork being longer than the former. These forks are constructed as indicated more definitely in Fig. 6, each being provided with a ledge or ange 8 at its lower extremity, the one to engage under the head of the lower fastener in the runway and the other to engage under one of the prongs of the fastener next above. The lever l2 is formed with a finger 9 to engage the dropper .a as the forward end of the lever rises to force the lower end of the dropper toward the die-spindle or into position to engage the prongs of a fastener. descent of the lever l2 the finger 9 is moved in position to permit a spring l0 to actuate the lower end of the dropper in the opposite direction to remove the anges of the fork 6 from the prong of the fastener supported thereon and permitting the fastener to drop off its flange, the liange of the fork 7 engaging the head of the fastening so dropped. The opposite movement of the dropper engages the ange of the fork 6 underneath the prong of the next fastener in the runway. The fork 7 being moved away, the lower fastening is permitted to drop. The lower portion of the runway is so shaped as to bring the fastener into position in the arm m, with the prongs projecting downward. The arm m holds the head of the fastener against the diej until said arm is withdrawn and until the prongs of the fastener enter the goods. It will be apparent that when the plunger moves downward the fastener will be held rigidly between the die and l[he lower extremity of the,
arm fm. The lever 12 may be engaged with the plunger t in any suitable manner-as, for example, the plunger may be formed with a recess 11, in which the lever may be engaged with said plunger.
In Figs. 2 and 6 is indicated in full lines the position of the fastener upon the prong 6 of the dropper, the position of the fastener relative to prong 7 being indicated in dotted lines. In Fig. 2 it will be evident that when a fastener is dropped into position shown in dotted lines the prong 7 will have been moved to the left to support the head of the fastener upon its flange.
