Description
J. FANNING. DRILLING APPARATUS.
No. 66,229. Patented July 2,4 1867.
l @uiten gieten @einer @frn foHN FANNING, oF NEW YORK, N. Y. 'Lenen Param No. 66,229, dated Juzg 2, 186.7.
IMPRDVED DRILLIN G APPARATUS.
'lO ALL WHOM IT MAY QONCERN:
Be it known 'that I, JOHN FANNING, of the city and State of New York, have invented, inode, and applied to use a certain'new and useful Improvement in Ha.nd-l)rill Stocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be o, full, clear, end exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein l Figure 1 is a. longitudinal section of said drill-stock;- and Figure 2 is a View at the end of the said stock.`
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts:
'.lhe object of my said invention is toeonnnunicate to the drill a larger number of rotations than is given to the apparat-us by hand, so'that by a cheap ,and simple contrivrtnoe a. small l'drill may be rotated-with greet spoed. The nature of'my said invention consists in abend-drill stock in which the power is applied on the line of the axis of the drill and transmitted to said drill by a planetary movement A.that increases the speed of thc drill without changing the mnnnerof applying the power to the stock or the mnnncr of pressing the drill to its work.
In the drawing, a is the drill or boring tool, of any usunl character, secured in any convenient manner within the sockets of the mandrel b. This znnndrcl b is sustained in the pipe c of the stationary internal gearwheel d. e is a handle projecting from the side ot' the said geur-cl, by which the tool inny be guided toits place and the wheeld be prevented fromf'nturning. f is a square or other connection for reeeivinga brace or other means for applying, by hond o r otherwise, rotation to the sqnnref and its projecting crank g that carries the pinion z', working at one side into the teetlrof the internal gear d and at the other side into the wheel h on the nandrel' b. The mandrel b ruins into e hole in the square f, and the parts are connected and allowed to turn by 1L-pin, o, entering a groove-in Ii. It will be understood that the wheel dbeng held stntionery'the wheel It will be revolved faster than the squarefin proportion to the number of teeth ot' d nnd It, the increased action of the pinion z', in consequence of its progression and rotation.
- This irriprovement'might be applied to give extra speed to smell drills when introduced in a. lathe adapted to large drills, and if the squaref was stationery and the wheel d worked by a ratchet and lever this apparatus might be used where a. brace could not bc employed, and by inverting' the position `ofthe drill and the power n slowerl motion vcon be given to the drill for .heavy work.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Potent, is'- A drilling apparatus, constructed as described and shown.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twenty-fth duy of February, A. D. 1867.
JOHN FANNING. Witnesses l i Cans. H. SMITH,
GEO. D. WALKER.
