SIGMUND LEDERER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LADYS G UARD-GHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,171, dated November 20, 1900.
I Application filed September 19,1900. Serial No. 30,463. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND LEDERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ladies Guard- Ohains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of ladies chains commonly known as guard, lorgnette, muff, or purse chains, in which one of the characteristics is a movable slide connecting different portions of the chain lengths. In this class of chains hitherto it has been customary to employ a slide containing a box with cork filling, which to adjust required the use of both hands for operation and moved with some difficulty, due to the friction of the inclosed cork. The chain also involved more expense in manufacture from the necessity of a slide-box.
The above objections are overcome and improved results attained by my invention, which is hereinafter described in connection with the drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1. is a front view of my improved chain; Fig. 2, a back View; Fig. 3, a front view of a modified form of the same, and Fig. 4 a back View of the latter form.
My chain is constructed as follows: Upon the back of the sliding member or brooch A and in its upper part at one side of its center is an eye a. To this eye are attached the terminals Z) I) of a continuous neck-chain c. From the terminal I) the chain 0 falls loosely down through a loop or eye d, also locatedin the rear of the slide at one side of the center of the same. The chain 0 continued again traverses the slide A through the loops or eyes m 6, each respectively located in the rear of the slide upon the opposite side of the center thereof from the loops d and ct. Running loosely along the chain c is a link or loop n, which connects an attached swivel 0 to the chain.
The construction above described permits the sliding ornament A to be raised or lowered at will by applying tension to one or the other of the depending chain portions. The sliding link n accommodates itself to any part of the continuous chain c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a guard-chain, the combination of a continuous neck-chain and a sliding ornament fixed to the front thereof on one side of the center of the ornament, said ornament being provided with guiding-loops on both sides of its center for engaging said chain.
2. In a guard-chain, the combination of a slide a continuous neck-chain, fixed to one side of the center of the rear of the slide in one or more places, and guiding means off the center and on another portion of the slide.
3. In a guard-chain, the combination of a slide a continuous neck-chain, fixed to one side of the center of the rear of the slide in one or more places, guiding means off the center and on another portion of the slide, and a swivel-bearing link slidably engaged with said neck-chain.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIGMUND LEDERER.
