Description

1N0. BEHMGE. Patented 00%. i6, IQUU. IH. G. ATWELL.
CLEVIS;
(Application filed. July 11 1900.) (No Model.)
rrn STATES ATE r rricn,
HENRY GEORGE A'IWELL, OF FOX LAKE, ILLINOIS.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 660,068, dated October 16, 1900.
Application filed July 11 1900.
To (6 whom it Hwy concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GEORGE Ar- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fox Lake, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Clevis, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clevises; and the object of my improvement is to furnish a clevis which may be attached to the evener or doubletree and singletree or whiflietree and connect the same without detachable pin or screw. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a view of the entire and complete clevis when in use and attached to the evener and the whiftietree. Fig. 2 is a view of the clevis with the parts A and B swung open, as they would be when the clevis is being attached to the evener or doubletree and the singletree or whiffletree, respectively, and also when disconnecting the same.
Throughout both views similar letters refer to similar parts.
The clevis as proposed is composed of three metal sections-the part A, the tongue 13, and the bar 0, as shown in the drawings. as shown, is a metal pin securely set in part A, as shown, by which the part A is held in contact with the bar 0. The opening or slot in the bar 0 (marked d) is sufficiently large from right to left to permit the part A to be swung back on the bar 0, as shown in Fig. 2, when attaching the clevis to the evener, and upon inserting that portion of the part Part 6,
Serial No. 23,204. (No model.)
A marked :t' through the pin-hole in the evener and into the space marked 1) in the bar 0, as shown at (band I) in Fig. 1, the clevis is easily and securely fastened to the evener. The draft against the arm to, as shown in Fig. 1, will cause the part A to remain securely inserted in the bar 0 at b, as shown. The tongue B, as shown, is a metal tongue inserted in the bar 0 at b and is held in position, as shown, by the metal pin f. Fig. 2 shows the tongue 13 raised to admit the ring of the whiffletree to the space marked 0. Fig. 1 shows the tongue 13 as fallen down on the bar 0, where it will remain of its own weight, thus preventing the ring of the whiflletree from leaving the space 0 and becoming disconnected with the clevis. The spaces in bar 0 (lnarkedl), (Z, and 7L, respectively, as shown in the drawings,) should be constructed no larger than necessary to admit the part A and tongue 13, as shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A combination in a clevis of the part A, the bar 0, and the tongue B, said parts being connected with each other, substantially as above set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY GEORGE A'IWVELL.
