UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FRANK THEODORE WILLIAMS, OE MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, AssIeNOR To- THE EDWARD MILLER &"CO'MPANY, OF CONNECTICUT.
LAM P-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part or Letters Patent No. 659,334, dated october 9, 1900. Application led J' ulyr19, 1900. Serial No. 24,180. (No model.)
i T all whom t may concern.:
my object is to improve the constructionof the same.
the same view with the parts Vin their lowered position, and Fig. 3 is a top View of the extinguisher-lange.
In the above preferred embodiment l is the outer wick-tube, and 2 the inner wick-tube,
within which a wick 3 may move. Within thel inner wick-tube is located a wall 4., preferably cylindrical,as shown. I prefer to fix this wall with relation to the inner tube and to hold it away from the inner tube, so that there will be' a space between it and the wick. To accomplish both these results, I have provided a spacer 5, which in' the embodiment shown consists of an inwardly-turned liange at the top of the inner tube.
6 is in this embodiment an extinguisher formed of a thin ring'of metal perforated on its inner edge, as shown in Fig. 3. This extinguisher rests on top of the wick, and in this embodiment protects the top thereof from, the iame. The flame burns from the outside of the Wick, and these perforations 7 are preferably located inside of the Wick, so that the charred'part'icles of the wick will not clog up the perfo'rations. The extinguisher is freely movable up and down with the wick, and I prefer to attach the same to Ithe perforated spreader 8, which is freely movable on the cylindrical wall 4..
9 is a rod xed within the inner wick-tube and carrying a stop l0, which may be removable,if desired, to limit the upward movement of the spreader, and therefore,in this embodiment, of the wick.
When the parts are in the rai'sed position shown in Fig. l, the spreader 5, together with the wall 4, will form a gas-space ll at the up; per end of the wick, and in this space gas will be generated from the inner side of the wick One of my principal objects is to provide at central-draft burner of the kind in which the wick burns on its outer circumference and isV by the heat, and the gas will pass out through the perforations 7 to the flame. In this way I have provided a construction which gives a brilliant and steady dame and which is cheap and easily taken apart and reassembled.
The construction above described is broadly claimed in my former application, filed the 18th day of July, 1900, Serial No. 23,991.
I am aware that many changes may be made from the construction herein disclosed without departingfrom the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not desire to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described.
What I claim is- I. In a lamp-burner in combination, an4 in-V .ner and an outer wick-tube, an extinguisher adapted to rest on top of a wick and be moved up above said outer tube, a stationary wall smaller than and located inside of said inner tube, a spacer to hold said Wall away from said wick and form, with said wall, a gasspace at the inside of said wick, one of said parts being perforated to allow the escape of gas from said space to the flame.
2. In a lamp-burner in combination, an inner andan outer wick-tube, an extinguisher adapted to rest on top of a wick and be moved up above said outer tube, a stationary cylindrical Wall smaller than and located inside of said inner tube, a spacer below said extinguisher and between said wall and inner tube to form, with said wall, a gas-space at the inside of said wick, said extinguisher being perforated to allow the escape of gas from said space to the fiame.
3. In a lamp-burner in combination, an inner and an outer Wick-tube,'an extinguisher adapted to rest on top of a wick-and be moved up above said outer tube to allow the flame IOO to burn at the outside of said wick, a stationperforated to allow the escape of gas from ary cylindrical wall smaller than and located saidV space to the flame. 1o
inside of said inner tube, a spacer below said Signed at Meriden, Connecticut, this 16th extinguisher and between said wall and inner day of July, 1900. 5 tube to form, with said Wall, a gas-space at FRANK THEODORE WILLIAMS.
the inside of said wick, a perforated spreader Witnesses:
movable up and down said wall and xed to I.. B. MILLER,
said extinguisher, said extinguisher being N. E. SMITH.
