PORTABLE SWING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,360, dated August 21, 1900.

Be it known that I, GLEN G. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to portable swings of the type used on lawns and in parks, and has for its object the construction of a swing of this type in such a manner that it can be folded together into a comparatively-small space for transportation or for packing away without loosening or removing any of the bolts or nuts holding the parts in place, and can be set up with the same facility. I accomplish these results substantially in the manner hereinafter set forth and described,

and illustrated in the following drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the swing set up. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.

In the drawings thus illustrating my invention the framework of the swing consists of two standards A A, each of which comprises bars A A secured together by cross-bars B B at the top thereof and B and braces 12 b at the bottom thereof, so as to make standards A A, formed by these parts, thoroughly rigid. In the upper ends of the bars A A and between the cross-bars B B thereon I cut slots a, and to the outsides of the standards A A, I pivot the lower ends of diagonal braces D D by means of bolts (1. These braces D D cross each other and are pivoted together where they cross by means of bolts 61, and through holes in the upper ends of the pair of braces D D, I place a rod (Z and also a like rod (1 through the upper ends of the pair of braces D D, these rods (1 (Z being adapted to rest in the slots a a in the upper ends of the standards A A when the swing is set up, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; but when these standards A A are moved together the rods d and d7 pass up out of the slots 0 a and permit the braces D D to turn on the pivots d d and cl therein and close together, like a pair of shears, and when the standards A A are again moved apart the braces D DI open up and the rods d d drop back into the slots a a, so as to hold the standards A A rigidly in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Upon the rods d d I pivot the upper ends of swing-bars E E, secured together by means of rods e and 6 e so as to form the swing-frames .to which the backs F of seats F are secured by means of pivoted arms f and slots f in the lower ends of the back frames F of the seats F, which are pivoted to the backs F and rest upon the rods e in the usual manner.

Between the rods e e at the lower ends of the swing-frames I place a rectangular platform H, which is retained on the rods 6' e by means of slotsh h, which drop over the rods I e a, while at the same time the platform II can be easily removed when it is desired to fold the parts of the swing together.

It will be observed that in this construction the lower ends of the braces D D are pivoted to the posts A and A of the standards A A by stationary pivots or bolts d, while the rods d by which the upper ends of the braces D D are secured together, rest in the open slots at a in the upper ends of the standards A A and form the supports for the swing-bars E E, thus forming a stable construction without any adjustable parts needing attention, either in setting up or taking down the structure.

Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The combination in a portable swing, of standards having open slots in the upper ends I thereof, cross-braces centrally pivoted together and pivoted at their lower ends at fixed points to the standards, rods connecting the upper ends of each pair of said braces and adapted to rest in the open slots in the tops of the standards and swing-frames pivoted upon said rods and supported thereby, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
