Description

Patented Aug. l4, I900.
B. A. KENNEDY. THUMB LATCH FOR ADJUSTMENT LEVERS.
- (Application filed. Mar. 23, 1900.)
(No Model.)
Fig.1.
NI'IED STATES BURR A. KENNEDY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
THUMB-LATCH FOR ADJUSTMENT=LEVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,140, dated August 14, 1900.
Application filed March 23, 1900. Serial No. 9,890. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURR A. KENNEDY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thumb-Latches for Adj nstment-Levers, of which the following is a fulldescription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap thumb-latch and one that can be formed to fit any thickness of lever to which it is applied.
In the drawings, Figure l is aplan view of the blank prior to being bent into shape for application to a lever. tion of the thumb-latch as applied to alever, a portion of the latter and catch-rod being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end view of the parts shown by Fig. 2.
I first cut a blank from a sheet of metal, substantially of the form shown in Fig. 1, and then bend it as shown in the side View, Fig. 2, and in the end view, Fig. 3.
A is the handle end of an adj ustment-lever of such width and thickness as required for the p11 rpose intended.
B is the thumb-latch, pivoted to the lever at b. The thumb-latch is provided with a catch-rod extension having an eye 12, into which the usual catch-rod O is hooked. The lever and rod 0 are broken off, as it is not necessary to show their length, as that will vary with various requirements. In order that the latch may clasp the lever, the blank as cut from the sheet is given the side extensions b and b each provided with a perfora- Fig. 2 is a side elevaforming alatch in the manner described is that a single blank may be cut and by suitable bending mechanism its arms folded so as to conform to any thickness of lever. In short, the blank B may be a stock article in the market and by suitable forming-dies be folded to conform to any particular lever that a manufacturer of machines using adj ustment-levers may require. If metal of suflicient thickness is used, the extension 12 may be dispensed with and the extension b only serve for the purpose of connecting to the lever.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A thumb-latch blank formed of sheet metal and having extensions projecting out wardly from one end and adapted to be bent around the lever to form the pivotal supports of said latch, and being provided also with a catch-rod connection.
2. A thumb-latch formed of sheet metal and having extensions projecting outwardly from one end and bent around the lever to form the pivotal supports of said latch, and a catch-rod connection projecting from one of said side extensions.
BURR A. KENNEDY.
