U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN HILL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
BELT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,403, dated August 7, 1906.
Application filed April 20,1900.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JONATHAN HILL, a citi- 'zen of the United States of America, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an improvement in fastening devices for connecting the extremities of driving-belts, having for its object an improved construction adapted to be quickly applied and locked to a belt or disconnected therefrom and which when applied will hold the belt in such a manner that it can travel over a pulley without injuring the fastener; and the invention therefore consists, essentially, in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a plan View of one end of a belt, showing my improved fastener applied thereto, one of the locking-washers being illustrated in its operative position, while the other is in the position it occupies when being placed in engagement with the hooked end of the curved bar. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the curved connecting-bar. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the belt, delineating the manner in which the fastener is applied thereto, the belt being shown in position on a pulley. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the locking-washers.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different figures.
1 1 denote the ends of the belt, which ends are beveled at 8 8, the said beveled ends being adapted to be brought into contact with each other when the several elements of the device are in relative position, as shown in Fig. 3. Near the beveled ends 8 8 of the sections 1 1 of the belt are openings or perforations 9 9, which are cut transversely through the belt to receive and accommodate a curved bar or bars 2, of which there are preferably two belonging to each fastener. These bars 2 (see Fig. 2) consist of a bent or curvedpiece of metal, each end of which is hooked 'or reversely bent at 3 3. These Serial No. 13,589. (No model.)
hooked ends are designed for the engagement therewith of the washers 1, which have the form and construction best represented in Fig. 4. They may have any desired shape or configuration and are flat, so as to provide a suitable area or amount of bearing-surface against the belt. lar slot 5 and an indented rectangular notch 6 in one edge, the said notch being parallel to the slot. When the ends 1 1 of the belt are brought together into the position shown in Fig. 3 and the curved bars 2 have been passed through the openings 9, the washers can then be brought into engagement with the hooked ends 3 3 and into a position fiat against the face of the belt. In order to place a washer in position, it will first be located as shown at the right hand in Fig. 1, where the notch'G is away from the beveled edge 8, and when in this position the hooked end 3 will be passed through the washer 4, or rather the washer will be passed over the hooked end, and the washer then reversed on the hook into the position shown at the left in Fig. 1, which is its normal position, and where the end of the hook 3 enters the notch 6, the edges of said notch firmly abutting against the book 3, so that when the belt is on the pulley a thorough and effective lock is provided, for it will be found impossible to displace the washer from the curved bar or from its bearing against the face of the belt under the strain to which the belt is subjected in service.
What I claim is 1. In a belt-fastener, the combination with a curved connecting-bar terminating at each end in reversely bent hooks, of washers adapted to engage said hooked ends, said washers consisting of plates having slots through which the bar passes and peripheral open notches engaged by the end of the hooks to efiect a lock after the belt is in position on the pulley.
2. In a belt-fastener, the combination with a bar having hooked ends, of washers having a slot through which the bar passes and a peripheral notch engaged by a hooked end to effect a look after the belt is in position on the pulley. V
3. In a belt-fastener, thecombination with a curved connecting-bar having bent ends,
Each one has a rectangw of fiat Washers having a, slot through which Signed at New York city, New Yofli, this the bar passes, and a peripheral notch par: 7th dayof April, 1900. V V
allel to the slot, to receive the hooked end of s the bar, in order to effect a secure lock be- JON ATHAN HILL 5 tween the bar and the washer when the parts Witnesses:
are in operative position upon a belt, as set JOHN C. WALL,
forth.
