RIGI-IARDJ. DOOLEY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED BICYCLE- SADDLE AND TOOL-CARRIER.
SPEGIFICiATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,209, dated August '7, 1900.
Application filed October 19;
.Ta alt whorwitamayoonaenn: Be it known that I, RICHARD J. DooLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bicycle-Saddle and Tool-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined bicycle-saddle and tool carrieror receptacle; and it consists, in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a combination saddle and tool-carrier which shall be simple and inexpensive in I construction and strong, durable, and satisfactory in use or operation; second, to so combine and construct asaddle and carrier as'to enable all of the necessary tools required for adjusting and repairing the difierent parts of the bicycle to be carried in a suitable receptacle beneath the saddle and in such a manner as to prevent them from rattling or becoming lost, and, third, to providea combined saddle and tool-carrier which by reason of its peculiar construction the tools may be easily reached for use without in any manner disturbing the adjustment of the saddle and;
when not in use will be safely and securely held in position.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceedto describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a saddle.
and tool-carrier embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmental View in elevation of the rear portion of the saddle and the closure for the tool receptacle or carrier,illustrating a lock for securing the two together.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly .in elevation, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1 look- 1899- Serial No. 734,054. (No model.)
i Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different viewsof the drawings.
i A represents a bicycle-sajddle of theordinary or any preferred-construction, to the lower surface ofwhich may be secured in any desiredm'anner a tool carrier'or receptacle B, which in the present instance is shown as being provided with three compartments b,
b, and 6 which extend longitudinally with the saddle and have their rear ends open for the reception of the tools-such as an oil-can a, pump a, and wrench 0 as well as screwdrivers, &c. The body of the carrier or receptacle B is preferably made of leather,with the pockets or compartments 1), b, and 1) secured thereto; but it may be made of any suitable material and have the compartments or pockets, which may be made of any desired number, made integral therewith.
Extending around the body of the carrier is a frame 0, made of wire or other suitable material, and may be attached to the leather or other material forming the body of the carrier or receptacle by overlapping and stitching same, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4:. The frame 0 is provided in its sides, near its rear portion, with curves or bends O to fit around the bolts (1, used for securing the saddle-spring D to the saddle, and the front portion of the frame 0," which extends under the nose of the saddle, is bent to form a loop 0 through which the bolt (1', holding the front part of the spring D, passes. When a saddle and a spring of the construction shown tool carrier B willbe held in place on the 'lower surface of the saddle by means of the nuts or washers e and 6, respectively, and the boltsd and d; but I do not desire to be limited to said means of attaching the carrier to the saddle, as I may secure it thereon in any desired manner.
Pivotally secured at one oftheir ends to the central portion of the carrier are rods g, which extend to near the rearportion of the saddle and have secured to their rear ends a transverse piece G, which is employed as a closure or door for the rear ends of-the compartments or pockets of the carrier. This piece carries a lock H, which I have shown as consisting of two bolts h, pivotally connected at about their middle and normally 25 stitche' held apart by means of a spring h suitabiy secured thereto, and of a lever H, futcrulm'ed on the key-cylinder W, and having a shouI-r der h to act on the lower portion of one of the bolts h to cause them to be pressed to-V ward each other by bearing down on thelznobh of the lever H, which knob may extend through the lock-casing. Located below the lever H is a. bolt H which may be thrust- Io under the lever H by means of a key in? serted in the key-cylinder, thus prevent ing the bolts h, being disengaged 1 from. the catch or h'as'p of" the saddle with wnicntn'ey engage, as is shown in mg 2 or are dr'awiii'gsi While the above-described lock is a converr ientpne and; I may sometimes use stock of such description; yet 11 do notdesire to be limited tlrereto, aslmay employ other means of securing the door or piece G to the saddle.
a of the drawings I have illustrated amodificationin; the construction; of my sad-j from-the tool}, carrier. or receptacle and sec-uring the same; to the saddle by means oi to lim t myself to'themeans by which the carrier. is attached to the saddle, asI may a employ any suit b-le means without departing from the spirit of my invention;
what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

rier, comprising the saddle havin'ga catch or opening, a tool gam or receptacle secured to the Iower portion of the saddle, and a door pivotally secured below the saddle to close the carrier, and having means to engage the catch on the saddle, substantia 1ly as described.
