Description

@with tang @anni @frn F. O. LA RIVIERE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO LUOIAN D. NEWELL AND MOSES R. GREELEY, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 65,491, dated June 4,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CUTTING THE LOCKS IN HOOPS POR BARRELS.
@te dgthtle tetrrt it it time trttets ttntt :mt mating pnt nf tlgc stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known thatI, F. C. LA RIVIERE, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Machines for Cutting Locks in Barrel Hoops; and I do hereby declare that the following is u. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the'lctters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings A represents a metallic frame, which has its lower end A secured fast upon a suitable table or bench. B B represent two guide-bars, which arev bolted fast to theedge of the frame A, having their ends turned outward, 'and provided with holes to receive the bars F F. The inner edges of these guide-bars are bevelled 0H' to a V shape. C represents a metallic sliding frame, which freely slides between the guide-bars B B and upon rodsF F, having its edges provided with V-shaped grooves which tit over the bevelled edges of the guide-bars B B, and two lugs, e, cast upon it, which are provided with holes through which the rods F F pass. The rods F F are surrounded with coiled wire and springs s s. The upper end of the frame C is provided with a knife, I), which is curved on its outer face, but straight on its edge. This knife is bent at right angles, as seen, and has a cutting edge from O to O. P represents a plate, which is secured upon the upper edge of the box A, and is provided with a cutting edge from x to z, and from x to z. d d represent two bolts, which secure the plate P to the frame A, and serve as guides for the hoop to be cut. E represents a lever, with a curved upper end passing through a slot in the plate P. Said end serves to clamp the hoop to the plate P While being cut by the knives. The frame O` has a longitudinal or endwise reciprocating movement upon the bars B B, being moved in one direction by a treadle, secured to the lower end of said frame, and returned by the springs s s around the rods F F.
The hoop in which the lock is to be cut is placed upon the inclined part of the plate P. The frame C is brought down by means of thetreadle until the knife D presses plate P. As the knife D approaches plate P the pin on frame C actuates the lever E, and causes it to clamp the hoop when it commences to be out, and after it has passe-d it, or up snugly to it, a piece is taken from the hoop, leaving a. shoulder to form its lock.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of the lever E, when constructed and operated to automatically clamp the hoop while the knife cuts the lock, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as set forth.
F. C. LA RIVIERE.
