HUB-LIN ER FOR RAILROAD-WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No.
654,641, dated July 31, 1900.
Application filed May 26, 1900. Serial No. 18,043. (No model-J T0 at whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK T. HYNDMAN, of Allegheny, in thecounty of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hub- Liners for Railroad-Wheels, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an friction and preventlng undue wear of the adjacent bearing-surfaces of railroad-wheels and the boxes in which their axles rotate which shall be of simple and inexpensive construction and readily insertible and removable as may from time to time be required without involving the necessity of dropping the Wheel or disturbing the box.
The improvement fully set forth.
claimed is hereinafter In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the inner side of a locomotive driving-wheel, illustrating an application of my invent-ion; Fig. 2, a diametrical section through the same; Fig. 3, a partial similar section on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4, a view in elevation of a hub-liner detached as seen from the inner side, and Fig. 5 an edge View of the same or one taken atright angles to Fig. 4;. V
In the practice of my invention I provide a hub-liner, of brass or other suitable wearing composition or metal softer than steel, which .is substantially in the form of a comparatively-thin annular plate and is composed of two separable sections-to wit, a mainbody l and a dovetailed or tapered filling-pieced, adapted to fit in a radial opening of corre sponding form. in the body. A semicircular recess 2 is formed in the body and a similar recess 5 in the adjacent edge of thefillingpiece, these recesses forming when the filling-j piece is fitted into itsseat in the opening of the body a circular opening through which the axle 7 passes. Lugs 3 and 6 are formed upon the outer portions of the body and filling-piece, respectively, said lugs being provided with tapered or conical openings for the reception of the countersunk heads of connecting-bolts 8, which pass through lugs 9 on the inner face of the hub 11 of the Wheel and are secured thereto by nuts 10.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that while-herein set forth as connected to a mechanical equivalent of that wheel-hub the liner may without difference of. operative principle or result be-similarly attached to the adjacentuface of the box in which the axle of the wheel rotates, and such latter construction I therefore specify as the shown in the drawings.
In the application of the liner the recess 2 of the body is slipped over the axle 7, and the filling-piece is fitted in its seat in the body, its recess 5 inclosing the semicircumference of the axle. The body and filling-pieces are then firmly secured to the wheel-hub by the connecting-bolts 8 and their nuts 10.
It will be seen that as the nuts 10 are at all times accessible the appliance may be readily attached and removed whenever desired when so far worn that its replacement by a new one may become necessary or desirable and also that its attachment and removal may be effected without necessitating the removal of the wheel or interference with the axle-box. Displacement of the filling-piece is also ef fectually prevented by its engagement with the sides of the openingin the body in which it is fitted.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hub-liner for railroad-Wheels, composed of a semicircularly-recessed body-plate, and a correspondiugly-recessed filling-piece fitting in a radial opening in the body-plate.
2. A hub-liner for railroad-Wheels, composed of a semicircularly-recessed body-plate, and a correspondingly-recessed filling-piece fitting in a radial opening in the body-plate, the body-plate and filling-piece being provided with peripheral lugs having conical openings for the reception of connectingbolts.
3. The combination of a wheel-hub having peripheral bolt-lugs, a sectional hub-liner fitting'around the axle of the Wheel, and composed of a body-plate and a filling-piece fitting in a radial opening therein, connectingbolts having countersunk heads fitting in the sections of the hub-liner and passing through the lugs of the wheel-hub, and nuts securing said bolts to the Wheel-hub.
