IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
@In tlgetule tuant tu it time @litten patent nu making ont at its nnte.
To ALL wHou rr MAY eonenRN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. NOYES, ci' Franklin, in the county of Venango, and State of Pennsyll Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made apart of this specification, and which represents a vertical longitudinal section of a pump illustrating my invention.
' In the ordinary tubular pumps the upper valve-seat is recprocated with the plunger, while the lower valveseat maintains its position at or`near the bottom of the tube. In this condition the lower valve is liable to be clogged and impaired in operation by gravel, etc., in water and'oil wells, and hy grain when used in a ships pump. In my improved pump the arrangement is reversed, the upper valve-box being stationary, and the lower one movable with the plunger, the rod of the latter passing up through the upper valve and valve-box, and being provided with a xcd collar, so that by means of the plunger-rod the entire apparatus may be introduced and properly adjusted in operating position, or withdrawn from the tube for repair or other purpose.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the drawing, A may represent a. pump-barrel, and B a section of tubing connected thereto in customary manner. C represents the plunger, which carries. a. ball-valve, D, opening upward, and which is attached t0 the lower `extremity of the plunger-rod Ef Hence, as the plunger makes its upward stroke, it carries with it the lower valve and its box, and the said valve is thereby made less liable to become clogged than it'would be if permitted to remain at the bottom of the pump-barrel during the operation. F represents the upper valve, which is a centrally perforated disk having its lower surface ground to fit a seat, F', formed for it in the upper part oi' the box G, which may be slightly tapered from top to bottom to adapt it to be tightly wedged into the upper end of the pump-barrel by the downward action of the iXed collar E on the plunger-rod.
In operation the plunger-rod E plays through the centre of the box G and upper valve F and sca-t F', and as the plunger rises the lower valve closes, and the upper one opens. When the plunger descends the superincumbent weight of the elevated liquid holds the upper valveA snugly to its seat while the lower valve opens and admits liquid into the pump-barrel between the valves, where it remains until forced upward through the upper valve by the ascent of the plunger. It will be seen that in withdrawing the plunger und lower valve from the pump-barrel and tubing, the forcible elevation of the same will serve also to dislodge the plug G, together with thel upper valve and box G, and thus the entire apparatus is withdrawn at once. Likewise, in the act of inserting the apparatus, the collar E is made to carry down the box G with suliicient force to wedge :it securely in its operating position'at the upper part of the pump-barrel. This pump has been well tested, and with it more successful results have been attained than with any other with which I am acquainted.
Having vthus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The pump herein described, constructed-with a collar, E', upon the plunger-red E, a valved plunger, C D,
and :twelve-box, G, adapted to be removed by the plunger C and forced down into the converging pump-barrel A by the -collar E', all substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
To the above specilicaton of my improvement I have signed my hand this 30th day of Marcil, 1867. WM. H. NOYES. Witnesses:
CHAS. A. IETTIT, SeLoN C. Knr/10N.
