BJARNI J. JOHNSON AND THORSTEIN PETERSON, OF SPANISH- FORK, UTAH.
BEET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION formin part of Letters Patent No. 653,558, dated 5111311 0, 1960. Application filed December 2, 1899. Serial No. 789,004. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that We,BJARNI J. JOHNSON and THORSTEIN PETERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Spanish Fork, in the county of Utah, in the State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beet- Knives, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improved construction of beet-knife, the object being to provide a knife for lifting the beets from the ground and cutting 01f the tops of the same; and with this object in View our invention consists,- essentially, in forming the end of the knife With a laterally=projecting prong, which prong may project in the direction of the cutting edge of the blade and beyond or back of the same, as preferred.
In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure lis a perspective view of a knife constructed in accordance with our in vention and the prong projecting in the direction of the cutting edge. Fig. 2 is a face view, the prong being shown as projecting beyond the back of the blade.
In carrying out our invention we employ a long fiat blade A, the back of which is made straight, while the cutting edge A is slightly curved. The handle B may be made in any shape desired. The outer end of the blade is formed with a laterally-projecting prong O,
which prong extends at right angles to the blade A and is tapered to form an engaging point C in order that it may be easily stuck into the beet for the purpose of lifting the same, and after the beet is so lifted it is removed from the ground, held in one hand, and the top out therefrom by the cutting-blade. The prong or fork is straight and formed lI1-' tegral with the blade and can be made to project at right angles. beyond the cutting edge of the back, as desired, and in the same plane therewith.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1'. A new article of manufacture, a knife, the tip of the blade of which is provided with a straight tapered prong extending at right angles therefrom and in the same plane therewith.
2. A new article of manufacture, a knife, the tip of the blade of which is provided with a straight tapered prong extending at right angles to the blade, in front of the edge and in the same plane therewith.
BJARNI J. JOHNSON. TI-IORSTEIN PETERSON.
