"PATENT 1 FFICE.
LOUIS WELKER, SR., AND WILLIAM N. WELKER, OF WILLIAMSPORT,
PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE.
S PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,370, dated July 10, 1 900. Application filed November 18, 1898. Serial No. 696,813 (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIs WELKER, Sr., andWILLIAM N. 'WELKER, residents of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement. in hinges, and more particularly to pivothinges for mirrors, transoms, and the like, one object of the invention beingto so construct a device of the above character that it willoperate to retain the mirror, transom, or the like in any inclined or upright position.
A further object is to so construct a device of the above character that it will by friction of one leaf of thehinge against the other maintain the leaves at any desired position relative to each other.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which will be neat in appearance, extremely cheap and easy to manufacture, and most effectual when in use.
With these objects in view the inventioncomprises two leaves or members 4 4. Each member or leaf 4 is provided with holes 5 for the accommodation of suitable screws 6, whereby to secure samein place. Each leaf 4 is provided on one edge with a flange or wing 7 (preferably formed by bending up one side of the leaf) at right angles to the leaf 4 and projecting between the mirror and support any desired distance. The flange or wing 7 on each of said leaves or members 4 points on one or both wings or flanges is held tight against the other wing or flange, and hence it will be seen that owing to the spring metal the projections or bearing-points on the wings will be held firmly against the other wing, and thereby maintain the mirror in any position to which it is adjusted.
We would have it understood that we do not wish to limit ourselves to only one projection on each wing or flange, as we may employ several, or we may employ one or more projections on one flange and none on the other flange. 7 j v Instead of constructing our improved hinge as above described we may construct same as shown in Fig. 4. In this form of our invention we provide on e leaf '4 with a slot 10, which communicates withthe hole or opening for the reception of the bolt or rivet 9 and extends to the upper edge of the Wing or flange, whereby to permit the removal of the mirror from the frame or support by simply turning the mirror until the wing or flange 7 secured thereto is at right angles to the other flange or wing, when the projections or bearing-points will be out of engagement with the other wing or flange and permit the easy removal of the mirror.
Various other slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of ourinvention, and hence we would have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hinge comprising two leaves each having it wing or flange at one edge, each of said specification in the presence of two subscribwings or flanges having a projection or bearing witnesses.
