IMPROVEMENT IN' STEAM GENERATORS.
the tllthlllt watch in ii: ilgrte Trims pan ant niahiz'rg part n1 i132 smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FRANCIQA. STEVENS, of Chicago,-in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotives and I do hereby declare that the following is a, full and exact descriptionthereof.
' -My improvements relate to a means of promoting the draught and urging the fire.
I will first describewhat I consider, the best means of carrying out my invention, and win afterwards designate the points which I believe to be new. The accompanying drawings form a. part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a cross-section on the line T T in fig. 2. v I
Figure'2 is avertical longitudinal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures Tints are employed merely to'distinguish parts; The material may be of the ordinary k'inds.
A is the barrel of the boiler; A is the fire-box,and B the internal tire-box or furnace. C is the ash-pan, which maybe attachedand removed by any of the ordinary approved means. The ash-pan is providedwith ordinary dampers in front and rear, operated by suitable connections,'to allow of one or both being tightly closed when required. Each side of theash-pan is provided with openings, in which are inserted short'tuhes a, open at both ends, to allow air to be received from the exterior. These tubes 0 may be of uniform diameter, or they may be conical, or of any other form whichanay be judged most conducive to. receive. the .air with. the greatest facility when actuated by the smallsteain ietdischarged into each. D D are horizontal pipes, permanently fitted to the boiler, and receiving steam through the pipes D and D from the dome at the top of the fire-box, controlled by the cock E. ThepipesD D are closed at both ends, and are provided with small orifices, .to which may be fitted short nozzles 0?, adapted to direct a small but powerful currentofsteam at fnll-boiler pressure into and alongthe central line of each of the tubes 0,-before described, in the ash-pan. The pipes D and their connections may be attached permanently to the boiler, and the nozzles 01 should be so short as to allow the ash-pan to be raised and lowered in attaching it and disconnecting it without disturbing the steam pipes. The boiler may be of any of the approved styles. So also may the cylinders and allparts of the running-gear. The exhaust steam fromboth cylinders is delivered through the exhaust pipes G into a capacions .chnmbe'r, H, mounted in the interior of the smoke pipe I, and arranged thereinas represented, so asto leave a ,spacd between the two inverted cones, through which the draught may rise and be urged forward by a gentle emission of the exhaust steam from a line of orifices near the base of the chamber H. J represents a cast-iron ring, through which the exhaust steam, at a very moderate pressure, is discharged in a series of streams. This series extends around the base of the chamber H, as represented; and the stream of exhaust steam discharged from each of the orifices of the ring J flows upward in the space between the chamber H and the smoke pipe I, and induces a steady and powerful draught. The chamber H is of such capacity as induces an almost perfect equality in the flow'of exhaust steam from the orifices when the engine is working rapidly. The top .of the smoke pipe may he provided with any of the strainers; or other approved appliances, in case fuel'is burned whichprodnccs sparks.
Some of the advantnges'due to certain features of my invention may be separately enumerated as follows:
1. By the arrangement of the pipes D, with the steam jets d, and their connections relatively to the boiler and ash-pan G, and to the openings 0 in the ash-pan, I am able to blow the tire with great vigor, by simply shutting the dampers at the front and rear of the aslnpan and opening the cockE; and this whether the engine is running on the track or is standing still, and without interfering with the convenient removal and replacement of the ash-pan as oftonand as rapidly as may be necessary in. any exigency. 2. By the employment of my chamber H and its connections, in combination with my blowing means and their connections, I am able, withoutmaterially adding to the cost, occupying any considerable space, or
.cumbcring or interfering with any of the ordinary modes of cleaning, adjusting, and repairing the locomotive,
to "work under all the immense variety ofconditions with regard to draught which are required in locomotives, working with almost inappreciable resistance to the exhaustrwhen it alone isemployed as the'promoterof com hustion, ainlthe cock E is shut, because the series of orifices for the jets J'may be very' capaolous w t mu lasing the effect, while, hyslmtling the damper and opening the seek E to a slight or to its full extent"), 'all'evigerof lhe firs may be inc'reuseli indefinitely. 1 V I u By elevating my resefvqigH, intlie stack, null arranging the ring of'jets; J, around tl ebusmus gepem sented,.1'am able to equalize the flqw of the stelzm, and to make the steam'mol e efficienttlm n usual in prduasbing the draught without intsrferingwiththe free uecess to the ends of the tubes in the smoke pipes when necessury for repairs, 8m.
' Having, new fully described my invention, what I clairii as new therein, and desire to secure by l miters-v Patent, is as follqws: v I I v 1. I claim theash-fian 0 hairiug theshort' tubes, cjin'th's sides, arrangdus herein specifisd,-relatively to the permanently-fixed pipes D and ixoz z'ies d, discharging steam firom the boiier jnto "the tubes 0, as specified, m1 ullowing the ash-pan to be eonneoteda nddiseouuebtedwitheut iisturbing the steam e'uimectiou;
,2. I laim the steam jets d, blowing ute theah-pan of the lbcomotive, arrangeil with; refei-ence to the exhaust reservoir H, with riuglof jets J, fer faciliteting the exitof the gases, substantially as aud for the purpose herein specified, I, I V N B, I ela-im the exhaust resrvoir H; made to correspond" in form with and; mouuterl in v "the interior of the smoke-stauk' I, so as to dischaige the steam from che ring- 0f jets J, aiaiurge upward m gases in the space between the two conical casiugsin the stack; in the menus: a'm'i far the purpose substa ntiully usherein specified.
