OF lVOOSTER, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 651,443, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed August 12, 1899. i'b'erifll NO- (N0 model-3 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. MANGES, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at ooster, in the county of lVayne and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and useful Combined Vagon Box and Rack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wagonracks.
It consists of the novel devices and combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined Wagpn-box with dump-boards, hayrack, log-rack, and stock-rack of such construction and in such sections or attachments that it may be readily and interchangeably used for either purpose instead of requiring a separate implement for each, as heretofore, thereby not only saving much expense, but also reducing the space required for storing such implements.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1 shows the main frame of my combined wagon-rack placed on ordinary bolsters g. Fig. 2 shows one side of my attachment forahay-rack. Fig.3 is my attachment for the front end of the hay-rack. Fig. 4 shows my section attachment for use as a front end-gate for a stock-rack. Fig. 5 is one of the side pieces detached, used in converting the wagon-box into a stock-rack. Fig. 6 shows my section attachment for use as a rear end-gate for stock-rack. Fig. 7 shows my section attachment to complete the log-rack. Fig. 8 shows my detachable end-gate and fastenings. Fig. 9 illustrates the hay-rack attachments in position for use.
Referring to the drawings, it is apparent that the main frame of my combined Wagon box and rack is made up of the longitudinal sills A A, respectively secured by and upon the several cross-bars 1 2 3 by means of suitable supports and fastenings, and the detachable end-gate D, secured in the front end of the box by means of the overlapping cornerflanges c and cross-rod e, passing horizontally through the same and the ends of the sills, respectively. The sills A are further provided with a series of sockets c 0, adapted to receive the lower ends of the several posts or standards a a, Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, and secu rel y hold the same in vertical position. The sockets are in like manner attached at each end of the end-gate D. These are provided with extensions 0 in the form of flanges or corner-angles to overlap the respective corners of the sills, the outer end of each flange being perforated to receive the cross-rod e, as aforesaid. By these means the end-gate is more securely fastened in position than heretofore, and the sockets c c of the same are adapted to receive and secure the respective lower ends of the standards a a of the several end-gate attachments F B, Figs. 3 and 4.
My invention is adapted for use as a hayrack, as shown, Fig. 9, by uniting with the main frame above described a side attachment, Fig. 2, (the section for the left side of the rack being in all respects identical with the right side, as shown.) Said attachments are respectively made up by rigidly securing upon the standards a one or more longitudinal strips 12 to project outwardly from the sills and at sufficient elevation to clear the ordinary wagon-wheels, and this I accomplish, preferably, by using a strip of suitable strapiron bent outwardly over the top of the standards, respectively, and securing the same upon the standards and strips 1) 12, secured thereto. I further provide a front ladder-support by means of standards F, Fig. 3, said standards being united together and adapted to enter the sockets c c of said end-gate D,wl1ereby they are supported in proper vertical position. My invention is also adapted for use as a log-rack by securing upon and across the sills A A of the main frame the detachable cross-sills C, Fig. 7, at suitable distances apart. For this purpose the under side of said cross-sills are notched to intersect with the upper edge of the sills A, as shown at O. Said cross-sills may be better secured thereon by means of threaded bolts, if desired.
My invention is adapted for use as a stock'- rack by substituting for the hay-rack sections above described side sections made up of longitudinal bars j j, attached to vertical standards, as shown, Fig. 5, and a front end.- gate 13, Fig. 4, said end-gate being provided with vertical stop-strips 0 0 to engage the adjacent ends of the longitudinal bars j j and also a rear gate E, Fig. 6, with like Vertical stop-strips 0 0 to engage the adjacent rear ends of the said side sections, said sections thus cooperating to form a complete stockrack. Said rear end-gate is secured at its base by open hinges n n to the ends 102 m of the sills A, thus adapting the same to be readily removed or lowered outwardly on said hinges to permit the ascent of stock thereon, and to better adapt it to this purpose the inner surface of the same is provided with a series of horizontal elevations ff.
The several sections of the stock-rack may be securely fastened together at the upper corners by means of hooks, chains, or other suitable fastenin gs, and the rack may be made of any desired height or may be made to flare outwardly by shaping the slant of the standards and stop-strips accordingly.
By my arrangement and combination of parts the main frame A, Fig. 1, may constantly remain upon the wagon for any of the said uses desired, as it forms the basis for the combination of the other sections, and by means of them, respectively, any one of the several implements mentioned may be readily provided. The bottom for any one of the several implements may of course be supplied to suit the required needs as may be desired.
I do not limit myself to any of the particular forms of manufacture of the several sections or main frame, as shown in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a wagon-box, the combination with the main frame thereof, comprising opposite sills, A, A, secured together at their bases by cross-bars, said sills each provided with a series of sockets, 0, adapted to receive and secure the lower ends of the several standards, a, of the several detached side sections respectively; of the detachable end-gate section, D, having sockets, 0, adapted to receive and secure the several end-gate standards respectively, and corner-bands, 0, adapted to receive and secure the adjacent ends of said sills,A, by means of bolt 6, passing through the same; and the detachable cross-sills, G, 0, having notches, d, fitted to engage the upper edges of said sills respectively, substantially as shown and described, andfor the purpose specified.
2. The combination with main frame, comprising sills, A, unitedly secured at their base to, and by means of, cross-bars, 1, 2, 3, said sills provided with a series of sockets, c, 0, adapted to receive and secure the lower ends of the standards, a, a; of the detachable end-gate D, said end-gate provided With like sockets, c and corner-bands, c, vprojecting therefrom, adapted to receive and secure theadjacent ends of said sills by means of bolt, 6, passing through the same; and detachable cross-sills, 0, having notches, d, fitted to engage the upper edges of sai sills respectively, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I hereto set my hand.
J. H. MANGES.
