RAILROAD-MILEAG E-TIOKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent'No. 650,940, dated June 5, 1900.
Application filed January 3, 1900. Serial 110.290. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, THOMAS N. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad- Mileage-Ticket Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make and use the same.
Theobject of this invention is to provide an improved mileage-tieket-strip holder of such form that it shall bediificult, if notentirely impracticable, for scalpers to deal in them.
The invention consists of an envelop to contain a folded strip-ticket, the sidesof which are formed of stiff flat material, the same being closed at all edges, and devices other than the material of the envelop itself securing or binding the edges of the envelop, said devices being of such character that if removed they will ordinarily be visibly disfigured or destroyed, and a slit in one of said sides permitting the withdrawal of the ticket-strip, but of such narrowness as to preclude the replacing of the said strip when withdrawn, in
connection with a ticket-strip retaining and tearing bar, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed. \Vith such a ticket of course the original pn "chaser m retenter into a suitable contract with the vender that if the holder or envelop be mutilated or if the ticket be withdrawn more than a prescribed nu mber of mile-representing parts before presentation for transportation the ticket shall be void. It may be remarked here, however, that the idea of a narrow slit calculated to prevent the replacing of a strip into a closed envelop is not new, for this is indicated in the patent of WV. D. Bates, No, 596,353, dated December 28, 1897, for a sales-slip; but the envelop in Batess patent is not constructed like that herein described, nor is it adapted to the stringent conditions incident to preventing the unauthorized bartering of railroad-mileage tickets.
In the accom panyingdrawings,in which one embodiment of the invention is shown, Figure 1 is a face or front view of the holder with a portion of the mileagestrip pulled out. Fig.
riveting-eyelets 2 or other suitable fastenin gs. I
The eyelets or fastenings are covered with a concealing-strip 3, pasted or glued to the three edges, so that it shall be necessary to mutilate or disfigure the concealing-strip to remove the eyelets. Transversely across one side of the envelop and preferably nearer one end thereof is made a narrow slit 4, just long enough to permit the withdrawal of the ticketstrip 5, and secured at a short distance beyond this is a retaining-bar 6, the edge of which is used to assist the conductor in tearing oif the portion of the ticket taken for fare. When the ticket-exit slit 4 in the envelop is made at a distance from both ends of the euvelop, the folds of the ticket may lie on both sides of the slit, thereby increasing the difiiculty of replacing the ticket if any considerable portion of it has been pulled out. The ticket-strip is of course put into and secured at one end in the envelop before the fastenings are put around the open edges thereof. The miles represented by the ticket-strip in such a holder will not be numbered consecutively, as heretofore, otherwise the purpose of the device will be defeated; but for the convenience of the conductor in counting the number to be taken elf the ticket will be divided into blocks of ten or five, as indicated in the drawings. The purchaser of the ticket, for his own information, will of course preserve a memorandum of the number of miles used from time to time, so that he may at all times know the exact number remaining in What I claim, and desire to soon re by Let ters Patent, is-
