Description

UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
criAnLns s. BEEBE, on menus, Wisconsin;
. SPECIFICATiON forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,448, dated M5 29, 1960.
Application filed July 17, 1899- fSeI-ial No. 724,079. (No model.)
To e'tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. EEEBE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its main object to provide a simple economical easy-chair having a combined continuous seat and back readily adjustable at will by movem ent of the occupant of said chair.
A further object of my invention is to provide one or both sides of a chair of the above description with a convenient shelf for books, papers, and other articles, while a still further object of said invention'is to provide said chair with pivotally-adjustable horizontal supports that serve as arm or leg rests by which the occupant of the chair is aided in assuming and maintaining certain positions.
The above-enumerated objects of my invention are attained by the peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of an easy-chair embodying all the features of my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same, indicated by line 2 2 in the preceding figure; and Fig. 3, a plan View, partly in horizontal section; the latter view being indicated by dotted lines 3 3 in the first figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates each of a pair of front corner-posts of the base-frame of my improved chair. Joined to each of the corner-posts are rearwardly-extending side bars B O, that cross each other and are halved together at the crossing. Braces D are utilized between the side bars B C at the rear, and other braces may be employed as parts of the base-frame wherever it is desirable or necessary to stiffen the same. The uppermost rear ends of the base-frame side bars B are curved and with the forward upper portions of the other side bars 0 of said frame constitute bearings for rockers E, that serve as the sides of a continuous seat and back frame. These rockers are guided in corresponding notches in the inner sides of the posts A aforesaid, and they are also guided and held against displacement at the rear of the chair by means in connection with the side bars B of said base frame. A As herein shown, notched outside shelves F, joined to the front corner-posts Aand the side bars B of the base-frame, constitute the rear giiides for the rockers E, each shelf, a rail G, and connecting-spindles H forming a rack for books, papers, and other matter.
Each front corner-post is provided with a vertical socket for a pivot-pin I, depending from the broad end of what is herein shown in full lines as a tapering horizontal flat arm J, the extremities and one longitudinal edge of the arm being at right angles; but it is practical to have the arms of the form shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The arms are pivotally adjustable to serve as supports for arms or-legs of the occupant of the chair.
The rocker sides of the continuous seat and back frame of the chair being loose in front and rear guides, an occupant of said chairmay with the aid'of his feet upon an adjacent floor or other resistance readily change position at will to suit personal comfort or convenience. The pivotally-adj ustable horizontal supports J I are necessary to aid the chair occupant in assuming and maintaining certain positions, they being utilized as arm or leg rests.
Having thus described my invention, what Patent, is-= 1. A chair having a base-frame comprising a pair of front corner-posts, crossed side bars extending rearward from each corner-post, the upper rear end of one of these bars being curved, and a rear brace between each pair of side bars, guides in conjunction with the base-frame, and a combined seat and back frame the sides of which have the form of rockers arranged in said guides to slide on the upper ends of the base-frame side bars.
2. A chair having a base comprising a pair of notched front corner-posts, a pair of crossed side bars extending rearward from each corner-post, a combined seat and back embody- 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ing rockers that rest upon said side bars and engage the corner-post notches, and 'rear guides for said rockers.
3. A chair having a base comprising a pair of notched front corner-posts,a pair of crossed side bars extending rearward from each corner-post, a combined seat and back embodying rockers that rest upon said side liars and engage the corner-post notches, and notched side shelves in connection with said base'constituting rear guides for said rockers.
4. A chair having a base-frame comprising a pair of front corner-posts provided at their upper ends with vertical sockets, crossed side bars extending rearward. from the cornerposts, the upper end of one o'f'the'se bars be ing curved, a rear brace between each pairo'f the side bars, guides in conjunction with the baseirame, a continuous seat and back hav-'; ing the sides of its frame in the form of rock ers arranged in said guides to slide on the horizontalsupp-orts having depending pivots engaging the sockets in said front cornerpost of the base-frame, said continuous seat and back being readily adjustable at will by movement on the part of the occupant of the chair to vary position with reference to comfort or convenience, the pivotally-adjustable supports serving as rests bywhich said occupant of the chair is aided in assuming and maintaining certain positions. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, in tnepresence of twdwitnesses.
