UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
ARON HERZOG,v OF OSTHOFEN, GERMANY.
` ADJUSTABLE PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,743, dated'May 1, 1900.
Application filed June 19, 1899. Serial No. 721,159. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, AEON HERZOG, a subject of the Grand Duke of Hesse, residing at Osthofen, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Packing-Boxes,
. of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists of a box for packing tobacco and the like, of which the size can be regulated by simple and durable means and the cover or lid of which can be quickly adjusted and secured in position by means of a peculiar contrivance and is provided with means which permit the application of the usual seals.
In the accompanying` drawings, representing this invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section.' Fig. 2 isa section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
The body of the box consists of the two parts A and B, of which the one part, B, is larger than the part A, so that it can slide over the same. -The part B is preferably, although not necessarily, provided with strengthening-pieces G, secured to the outside of the top and resting on the edges of the sides of the body, and at the sides are the strengthening-pieces F. In a similar manner the other part, A, of the boX is provided with transverse strengthening-pieces E at the bottom and vertical pieces D at the sides and longitudinal side strengthening pieces C. The pieces D are secured at a distance from the surface of the sides equal to the thicknessof the sides of the part B. By this arrangement it is possible upon sliding the part B over the part A for the sides of the former to fit tightly between the pieces D and the sides of the part A. The strengthening-pieces D and F are, further, so attached to the sides of the parts A and B, respectively, that upon sliding the two parts on each other these pieces bear one against the other and act as guides. Vith this arrangement it is possible by means of ordinary screws d, which are passed through the strengtheningpieces D and into the sides of the part B, to secure the latter in any position to which it is adjusted, and thus' regulate the height of the entire box A B according to the goods to be packed.
The cover, which is detachable, is formed by the top of the part B, is in two halves I I', to which are secured the pieces M near the abutting edges, the ends of said pieces resting on the edges of the sides of the body part B, and the joint is covered by the intermediate detachable piece N, which is held at the one end by the clamp K and isl secured at the other end by means of a common screw L. The two halves I and I are thus prevented by cross-pieces G and M from falling into the part B, while the pieces H 'and N prevent them from rising; but on removing the piece N each section of the cover can be withdrawn.
Vithout limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, I claim- 1. A packing-box, adjustable in size, consisting of two parts A and B, one of which slides upon the other, with guides D and F, and securing-screws d, d, substantially as described.
' 2. The combination of the two parts A, B, the former fitting into the latter, guide-strips F F on the outside of the part B, and guidestrips D D supported beyond the part A to engage the strips F F, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a packing-box, of a body provided with cross-pieces H H, and a lid in two parts fitting within the body and each part provided with cross-pieces G M with their ends resting on the sides of the body part, and a detachable strip N between the two cross-pieces IWI N, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ARON HERZOG.
