UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. REMMEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METALLIC SEAL O-R STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,300, dated April 24., 1900.
Application filed January 20, 1899. Serial No. 702,773. (No model.)
.To ctZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. REMMEY, of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Seal or Stamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to engraved stone, glass, or metal stamps by which an impres- Io sion is made in a pliable mass, such as sealing-wax; and the object of the invention is to provide a new and improved metallic seal or stamp, which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, and ar- I5 ranged to give a very fine appearance to the impression made in the pliable mass.
- The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is an enlarged face view of the seal partly finished. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged face View of the finished seal. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 4 4 in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a face view of the impression made by the seal.
The improved metallic seal or stamp is provided with a bodyA in the form of a disk and having a shank B for receiving a handle or other device to permit of conveniently' manipulating the seal to make the desired impression. On the face of the body A is 40 sunk a letter or other character, monogram, symbol,or like character (Land on the said face is also arranged a background D, consisting of crossing straight ridges formed by milling the said face diagonally with a suitable 4 5 milling-tool, the depth of the cuts being somewhat less than that of the sunken character 0. The body A is further provided with a border E, made smooth on its face and separated from the background portion of the disk by an annular groove F, extending in depth below the said background portion, as gill be readily understood by reference -to ig. 4. W
In making the seal the body Ain the form of a blank smooth-faced disk is provided with the countersunk character 0 and then the face is milled crosswise through its entire surface, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. When this has been done, the annular groove F is formed on the face of the. disk to' cut out a portion of the milled background and define the latter in a circular space, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3, and then the milled portion of the disk out side of the groove F is removed bya suitable cuttingtool to form the smooth border E, separated from the background by the annular groove F, the depth of which is below the plane extending through the bases of the ridges forming the background, the face E also coinciding Withsaid plane.
From the foregoing it is evident that the seal described can be very cheaply manufac* tured and at the same time a very fine appearance is given to the impression made by the seal in wax or other plastic material, as indicated in Fig. 5, it being understood that in the impression the character appears raised on the depressed background and the latter is surrounded by a raised ridge leading at its outer wall into a groove, the outer wall of which appears in the mass forming the seal.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of. manufacture, a seal or stamp having a raised surface containing a centrally-located sunken character and provided with a marginal border in a lower plane than the raised surface and separated therefrom by an annular groove, as set forth.
' 2. As an improved article of manufacture, a seal or stamp having a centrally-located sunken character, a milled background formed by straight and crossing ridges, and a plain border surrounding the background and separated therefromby an annular groove extending in depth below the background, the border being in a plane below the said background, whereby the background will project above the border and will be formed with a uniform milled surface throughout, as set forth.
v WILLIAM T. REMMEY.
