T0 .ALL WHOM IT MAY'CONCERN:
Be it known that I, C. PH. WAGNER, of thc city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Presses for Pressing and Baling Hay, Cotton, and other materials or substanc'e's of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in whichf x Figure 1 represents a sectionaly side elevation of a baling-press constructed according to my improvement.
Figure 2, a sectional side elevation of the same-in part, viewedat right angles to fig. 1; and
Figures s, 4, 5, 6,7, s, 9, 10, 'and 1'1, views of details eached. v
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
The nature `of my invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement, in connection with togglejoints, of worm segments forming'what has been termed in other presses a close nut, by the same receiving in between them a vertical operating screw, said segments, in this my improvement, being constructed with inte'i-, mediate radial arms, to which double or divided toggle-joints are pivoted to operate the platcn,'whereby, not only is increased steadiness secured, but space economiZed, andfirst a slow, afterwards gradually quicker, and finally slower action, for a uniform velocity of the driving-shaft, given to the platen.' Said invention also consists in a. novel construction of baling-box provided with detachable side uprights fitting into shoes at their' base, and gearing with open hook endsof a top cross-bar to the cover of said box, to prevent springing ofrthe latter without restraining the opening of the same when required.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A representsthe uprights and cross-barsor frame of the press.-
Arranged at or near the base is a horizontal operating shaft,iB, which may either be worked by hand or be rotated by or from anysuitable power, by gearing or pulleys C C, thrown in or out of gear with the shaft B,
to stop and start orreverse the motion of the press, by a clutch, a, worked by a lever o'r otherwise This shaft B is carried in standards on across-brace or frame, b, and has mounted on its inner end a bevel-pinion, c,
which serves to give motion, through a bevel-wheel, 0l, to a vertical screw, C, working in a step of the cr0ss-.
brace b. If desired, a second operating. shaft, with bevel-pinion attached, may be arranged on the oppositeside of the vertical screw C, for working by'hand on both or opposite sides of the wheel d. The vertical screw C is arranged to fit between, so as to gear with them, segments D D, provided with worm teeth on their edgesor peripheries, said segments being on parallel horizontal shafts e e, resting in plumberhblocks, s, and having their edges or periphcries facing each other on opposite sides of the vertical screw, and forming, in conjunction, a nut to the screw C, as other segments for working presses have been used, but my construction and arrangement of such devices essentially diifer from previous ones for the purpose, not simply in the positionof their devices at' or near the base where the action is steadier, and where` the driving power is more readily available,.as, for instance, where horse-power to work from the ground is employed, but furthermore diifersl in its connection with and operation of the toggle-joints to raise andlower the platen, that, in this case, lifts to effect the pressure, by constructing said segments with intermediate radial arms E, inclining downwards on starting t'o press, but projecting upwards when the 'pressure is completed, and so-that the points of attachment of the toggle-,joints to said arms and to the platen lie in the same vertical plane. F'F are the toggle-joints, made double, ordivided on either side and connected by cross-pins fg to the arms E and platen G. The toggle-joints in being thus made double at either side, and which vibrate through slots h in the filling or packing-box H, not only give 'a steadier motion to the platen, and render unnecessary all extra or special guides to it, but admit of a longer throw within agiven space or compass to said rods, and still preserve an equal thrust en opposite s ides of the segments, which, in commencing to effect the lift, act upon .the toggle-joints considerably below the segment shafts e e, as represented by black lines in iig. 1, and opcrate-upon said toggle-joints till, in com'pletingfithe pressure, they arrive at theposition shown for them by red lines in the same figurer This range. of action for the togGle-joints is not only aA-greateconomy of space in the working of the press, but by it the motion to the platen,`
23 with a uniform velocity of the operating shaft, is slow at starting, which gives time for adjusting the ,fil-ling, and for air contained in the loose cotton or material to escape, and afterwards comparativelyrapid, till towards the close of the pressing stroke, when the motion becomes gradually slowerand more powerful to meet, as in other Ltoggle-joint actions, the inereesed resistance. Brace-rods i2', :L1-ranged on opposite sides of the frame, serve to strengthen the letter and tie the filling-box with the lower portion' of the frame, and to these are hitched upper brace-rods hooking` :1t their upper ends, so as to he capable of easy removal on to the cnfls of cross-hemns c Ic, secured on the top of the cover I of the heling-box, to which J J are the sides, and K K, :tre the end hom-(ls hung on lower hinges ZZ, :1nd locked hy hooks and catches m m and 11H71, to facilitate the opening and closing of the balingbox, the cover I of which, and platen G, are groored es usual for passage of the belngropes. To 1g-box when it has been closed and locked Vagainst the pressure induced bythe platen on the hule, a. cross-bar, L, formed withop'en hook ends, 'is secured across the top of the cover I, for geur or lock, with upright side-braces M, fitting into shoes o, :tt their base, and with the hook ends of the cross-ber L at their upper ends so that thesnme xnztyrreedily he detached when it is requireil to open the heling-box.
Whitt I claim as my invention, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. 'Ihc combination of the vertical screw C with the segments D D, provided with radial arms E, pivotenl by (l'ouble toggle-joints F Fv to opposite sides or ends of the platen, operating so as to give to it a variable velecitjyv :ind action, substantially :ts specified.
2. The side-braces M, {itting into shoes o at their hase, and gearing with open hook ends ol' :L crossbar` Ii, to the cover of the heling-box :1t top, essentially as shown and described.
