SEED-PLANTERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A. HILL and CONRAD Louxss, of Springfield, in the county of Clark, and
State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Seed-Planters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a plan.
Figure 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section; and
Figure 4 is a similar section through one of the seed-boxes.
The same letters are employed in all the figures when indicating the same parts.
A is the frame of the machine. This frame is made intwo corresponding parts, forming the two similar sides of the machine. The frames are joined at A in the middle of the end-pieces, which are each cut away one-half of their diameter, and arranged to overlap, sliding out and in through the bands B B, which are attached respectively to the ends of the end-pieces, sliding over the other piece. The bands 13 remain in the middle of the frame, and have holes in them to receive the pins O, which pass through the end-pieces, holding them in any required position. This arrangement of the frame permits it to be arranged to plant in wider or narrower parallel ions, as required. The wheels D and D are placed. on each side of the frame. The wheel D has on its inner face a series of holes toreceive pins D, which may be adjustably arranged to actuate the seedvalves, according 'to the requirements of the work; Scrapers, D are attached to the frame to scrape off the earth which may adhere to the wheels. These pins as they revolve strike against the lever E, which is pushed thereby towards the seed-hopper. As soon as the pin disengages the lever it is quickly brought back by the spring E, acting upon a rod attached to the lever E,'and parallel thereto. The lever E is connected directly with the valve F by the pin F The valve F is actuated by the compound lever G, which consists of two levers joined at their ends, and respectively turning upon pivots near their centres, passing through elongated openings in the levers. The pins F are fastened to the valves F and F respectively, and pass through curved slots near the outer end of the compound lever G, which permit the width of the frame to be adjusted without interfering with the action of the seeding apparatus. H is a connecting-bar, extending from the junction of the two pieces of the compound lever back to the vertical hand-lever I, placed immediately in front of the drivers seat K. By means of this levcrthe drivcrmay actuate the seeding mechanism if desired, or by drawing the lever back into a slot in the end of the seat, where-"itmay be secured hythe hook I, thus preventing the action of the seeding mechanism. The seat K is placed longitudinally between the wheels, and, by sitting back or forward upon it, the driver, may regulate the depth of the ploughs according to the charactor of the ground. L is the grain-hopper, one being placed on each side. The valves F and F pass under the hoppers, and when the hole in the valve is under the hopper it will he filled with grain. When the valve is drawn back this opening passes under the lip L, which extends from the bottom behind the hopper, and
immediately over thevalve. The seed being drawn over a hole falls through the pipe M into the furrow made by the ploughs N. The ploughs are made withlfloring sides, the points being nearly horizontal, and rising curving upwards towards the heel. At the heels-on, each side the shovcls O are placed, being adjustably attached to regulate the depth of their cut so that they may be used for covering the seed, or entirely ,withdrawn. when the ploughs are used merely for furrowing out. 1 is a lever attached to the frame, and passing below the flooring S, and having a quadrant formed cam cccentrically attached to it. The tongue Bjis carried entirely under the-machine, being attached to the frame at the rear end. The cam immediately over the tongue, and does not touch it when the ploughs are in the ground; but when it is desired thati' the p'loughs. may be raised the lever P is drawn back, the cam Q pressing upon the tongue li and as'this' is supported upon the ecks of the horses it cannot yield, but the front part of the frame will he raised, lifting the ploughs above the "round. The tongue passes through a slot in the brace T, which is fastened to the front end of the frame, hus preventing any lateral action of the tongue. This brace is curved backward to its lower end, which is arried low enough to touch the ground, and prevent the'ploughs taking too deep a hold, particularly on rising round. This may also be accomplished by Wheels set under the front of the frame if preferred.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the double-sided ploughs, curving upward from near the point to the heel, and the hovels O adjustably attached thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the wheel D, adjustable pins D lever E and spring E, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the lever E, valves F and F, and pins F with the compound lever G, having curved lots G in the outer ends, substantially as set forth. I
4. The combination of the compound lever G, valves F and F, connecting-bar H, lever 1, hook I, and fivers seat K, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the drivers seat K, lever P, cam Q, and tongue R, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the tongue R, attached to the rear of the frame, and the brace T, attached to the rout thereof, and constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
