IMPROVEMENT IN STUMP EXTRAGTOB.. I

Be it known that I, DAVID CARROLL, of Union, in the county of Erie,iand State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Stump Extractor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of machines employed for extracting stumps in fields, and consists in the employment of an endless chain, in combination with three wheels, over and around which the chain works, the said wheels being located upon a derrickv erected for the purpose. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a, plan view of my improved stump extractor.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.

I erect a derrick,'con1posed of three inclined posts B B B, with the upper ends Aiirnily bolted or secured to a cross-timber, C. Immediately below the cross-timber C is another strong cross-timber, D, firmly secured to two of 'the posts R. Between the two cross-timbers C and D is located a pulley, E, constructed in such a 1nan.- ner as to it the links of a chain, for the purpose of operating the same. This pulley D is rigidly secured to the vertical, shaft I", that isy provided with journals which run in suitable bearings secured to the cross-timbers C and D. G is also a pulley, constructed in the same manner as the pulley E, secured to the horizontal shaft II, that has bearings in two of the posts B B. I is another pulley, made the saine as the4 pulleys E and G, so that its surface will admit the links of a chain, and assist in operating it. .The pulleyI is secured to a short shaft, that has bearings,`and runs in a hifurcated bar or straps J, the shank end of which is pivoted around the shaft II, so that the pulley I may be elevated or lowered, or will move in the arc of a circle described by the' shank or strap J upon the shaft I-I. At the side of the pulley G is secured a gear-wheel, K, thatmeshes and works in a corresponding gear-wheel, L, that is secured to the side of the pulley I. M is an endless chain that works over the pulleys before described. In the loop ofthe endless chain M is attached a single chain, N, employed for the purpose of hitching around the roots of a stump, as shown at C, fig. I, for the purpose oi' extracting it from the ground. P is a cross-bar, located and secured across the top of thc vertical shaft At each end of the bar I? is attached by joints a bifurcuted lever, Q, by which the machine is operated. At the lower ends oi' the inclined posts B are caster-wheels and shoes R R t, secured for the purpose oi' moving the machine from one place to anothclgand to prevent the posts from sinking into the ground when the machine is in operation. e e c are timbers, running horiontally around the derriek, and firmly secured to the posts, for the purpose of adding strength and stability to the derrick.

When it is desired to operate the machine, it is placed over the stump in such a position as' to bring the single chain N perpendicular over the point where it is designed to be hitched. Power is then applied to the end'o` the level' Q, and moved around in the direction of the arrow a, which causes the endless chain M to move in the direction of the arrows e c, which brings the single chain N to act directly upon the stump, and raise it from the ground.`

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, andy desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is

I. The pulleys E, G, and I, in combination wlth the chains M and N, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. I claim the casters and shoes R R R, in combination with the derriek, substautiallyas shown andv described, and for-the purposes set forth.
