WATCH-CHAIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,149, dated March 13, 1900. Application filed May 11, 1899. Serial No. 716,391. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keosauqua, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Watch-Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in watch-chains and its object is to make watch-chains stronger and more durable.

Heretofore the weakest point in chains has been the ring which connects the snap with the first adjoining link of the chain. Snaphooks as usually constructed for use on watch chains consist of a single hook, over the shank of which is swiveled a knob having an open wire ring secured thereto, said ring forming the connection between the hook and the first link of the chain. 1 Owing to the small size of the ring, to be in proper proportion to the links, and the fact that it is soldered to the knob, it has seldom been possible to carry a chain for more than one year. Moreover, as said ring is secured at but one end, the opposite end being free, it is not an unusual circumstance for it to gradually spread open, and thereby free the watch from the chain. Besides, when the watch or chain is jerked this ring affords very little opposition to the separation of the two. I

My invention consists of a compound hook having inner knobs and oppositely-extending snap-hooks and a headed pin extending cen trally and longitudinally through the knob portions and serving as a pivot therefor and to hold the parts of the compound hook together.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention, referring to which-- Figure 1 is a detail view of a watch and chain connected by my improved compound snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a detail view of said hook detached, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section therethrough.

Referring to said views by letters of refer ence, A is a chain of any suitable form or construction.

B is a watch, and B is the ring thereof.

The compound hook C is formed of two snap-hooks D of any preferred construction, each having a tongue D, which is normally seated by means of a suitable spring, as d. The hooks are made of any desired weight and size and are each provided with a knob portion E. The knobs bear against each other and are swiveled together by means of a pin F, as shown.

It will be seen that this device can be readily attached to or detached from the watch and chain.

It is to be understood that this device will increase the durability of snap-hooks heretofore constructed at least fivefold, while the cost of manufacture remains substantially the same.

My invention strengthens the chain and makes it more durable, whereby the Watch and chain cannot be as easily separated or become separated by ordinary-wear.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications maybe made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to .make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A compound hook for a watch-chain &c.,

comprising a headed pin extending centrally and longitudinally through the knob portions and serving as a pivot therefor, and to secure said parts together, oppositely-extending similar snap-hooks, and inner knobs on said hooks, substantially as described.
