OLAF INGVALD SAMDAL, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
BLOTTER-HCL'DER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,725, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed Dotoher '7, 1899! Serial No. 732.946. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLAF INGVALD SAMDAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Blotterdlolder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blotting-pads, and has for its object to provide an improved holder for detachable connection with different sheets of blotting-paper, so that the latter may be renewed when rendered useless from continued application or from any other cause.
It is furthermore designed to provide an improved handle for the convenient and ready manipulation of the blotting-pad.
To these ends the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in: vention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a blotting-pad constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, taken on the line 00 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3/ y of Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
1 designates the body of the holder, which is 4 preferably formed of a thin sheet of flexible celluloid, preferably.of rectangular shape, as shown in the drawings; but it will beof course understood that any other shape may be employed as desired.
At opposite ends of the body and alined longitudinally intermediate of the opposite longitudinal edges thereof there are provided spring-clips 2, which are fixedly connected to the upper face of the body and have springiingers 3, which embrace the adjacent edges and extend inward and substantially parallel with the under side of the celluloid sheet.
The sheet of blotting-paper 4 is out to the size of the celluloid body and is fitted between the under side of the latter and the upper sides of the spring fingers, so that the blotting-sheet is detachably connected to the body of the holder.
For convenient manipulation of the blotting-pad there is provided a handle 5, which is formed of stiff celluloid, rolled 0r twisted into the form of a cone, having a flat attaching-base 6, formed by one edge of the sheet, from which the handle is rolled or twisted. The attaching-base is glued or otherwise secured flat against the upper face of the body and inclined transversely across the inner left-hand corner thereof when the blotter is placed in the position for use directly before the writer. As shown in Fig. 1, the larger end of the rolled handle is located adjacent to the inner longitudinal edge of the body and the opposite smaller end is located adjacent to the left-hand end thereof, so as to be in convenient position for manipulation by the left hand of the writer, thereby leaving the right hand free.
It will be noted that the main portion of the handle is formed into a spira1,which is located above the base thereof, so that the end of the fingers of the operator may be passed beneath the body of the handle in order to obtain a firm hold thereon.
Extending the entire length of the outer longitudinal edge of the body is a metallic strip 7 which is graduated to provide a ruler.
In using the present blotting-pad the handle 5 is held in the left hand, so that the right hand may be free for the purpose of writing, and the blotter mayv be applied immediately after the writing has been finished. By having the handle increasing in diameter from the outer or left-hand end toward the inner or right-hand end a convenient shape for fitting the palm of the left hand is provided, so that the handle may be firmly grasped.
It will of course be understood that it is de* signed to provide similar blotting-pads with the handle arranged at the right-hand side of the body, so as to accommodate the blotter to persons who write with the left hand.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Let= ters Patent, is-
and the opposite smaller end extending toward the front of the adjacent transverse edge of said pad.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
OLAF INGVALD SAMDAL.
