WATCH SAFETY DEVICE.

Be it known that I, JOHN SAVELAND, of the town of Lake, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vatch Safety Devices, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improved means for securing a watch in a pocket or to such article of clothing as is provided with the pocket in which the watch is carried, while at the same time providing for permitting of the lifting or withdrawing of the watch from the pocket sufficiently to permit of looking at it to ascertain the time without detaching it entirely from the pocket.

My improved construction is adapted to prevent a watch secured thereby from falling or being accidentally thrown from the pocket to the ground, or into the water when the person is sailing, or into any other inaccessible place.

My invention consists of the devices and their combinations, as herein described and claimed, or the equivalents thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a fragment of a vest, with a pocket indicated thereon and the fob-chain of the watch in connection therewith, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 shows the fob-chain for a watch in connection with a fragment of the outer wall of the pocket shown in cross-section. Fig. 3 shows a button or guard employed in my invention on the fob-chain. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of afob-chain in connection with a fragment of the outer wall of a pocket in section. Fig. 5 shows a jacket of the kind worn by ladies, with a fob-chain suspended from the pocket thereof, the fob-chain being a modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the fob-chain of Fig. 5 in connection with a fragment of the outer wall of the pocket in cross-section. Fig. 7 is an inside view of the outer member of the fob-chain of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 shows a fragment of the jacket of Fig. 5, showing in detail the upper portion of the outer wall of the pocket and the aperture therethrough for the chain.

In illustrating my invention I have shown it in one form in connection with a pocket of a vest such as is worn by a gentleman; but

the watch-pocket may be in any other garment, as in the trousers of a gentleman or in a waist or jacket as worn by ladies. Also in illustrating my invention I have shown it in connection'with a fob-chain, of which I have shown modified forms; but theinvention may be embodied in other forms of watch-chains without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings, 5 is a fragment of a vest, and 6 is the upper portion or margin of the outer wall of a pocket in the vest. This upper portion of the wall of the pocket is commonly a band or renforciug-strip doubled at its upper edge and of two thicknesses. In this outer wall of the pocket at a little distance from the upper edge there is a chainaperture, which for this form of a fob-chain is an elongated slot 7. The fob-chain employed therewith consists of an inner section 8, which is provided at one extremity with a snap-hook 9 or some equivalent means for attaching the chain to a watch, and near its other extremity this inner section is provided with a guard 10, which is in the form of a button of such size and conformation that it will not pass through the slot 7, but will engage the wall of the pocket about the slot, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The outer sect-ion of the fob-chain 11 is attached to the inner section 8 exteriorly of the guard 10, conveniently by a snap-hook 12 taking into an eye or link on the button or equivalent means, and at its outer extremity or at a distance from its connection with the inner section this fob-chain is provided with an enlarged device or stop 13, which may be of ornamental character, of such size as not to be capable of passing through the slot 7.

In using this device the. hook 9 is caught into the ring of the watch, the eye or link on the guard 10 is passed from the inside of the pocket through the slot 7, and the hook 12 of the outer section of the chain is caught intothe eye or link on the guard 10, permitting the outer section of the fob-chain 11 to hang suspended from the inner section 8 at the point of connection therewith just outside of the guard 10. The guard 10 engages the inner surface of the wall of the pocket, and the inner section of the chain between the guard 10 and the hook 9 is slack in the pocket.

\Vhen the user desires to look at the watch to ascertain the hour of the day, he raises the watch from the pocket to such extent as is permitted by the slack of the inner section 8 of the chain or can draw it out farther, the outer section 11 being adapted to slip through the slot 7 up to the member 13, which is of too great size to pass through the slot, and thereby the Watch is held against being removed from the pocket while attached to the fob-chain.

In the modified form of device shown in Fig. 4 the construction of the parts is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that the member 13 is shown as a diiferent form of ornamental device, but of such size as not to be adapted to pass through the slot 7 in the wall of the pocket, whereby it is adapted to serve effectually as a stop against the removal of the chain therefrom in that direction.

In the modified form of device illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, 7, and S, in connection with a pocket in a jacket 14 of the style worn byladies, the inner section of the chain consisting of the section 8, the hook 9, the guard 10, and the link or eye on the outside of the guard, the members are substantially the same as shown in the other figures; but the outer section of the chain is provided with a stop 13 ,of enlarged size andornamental form to which the hook 12, that takes into the eye on the guard 10, is directly attached. This ornamental stop 13 is of such size as to not be capable of being passed through the aperture 7 in the upper portion of the outer wall of the pocket 6. In connection with this form of fob-chain the aperture 7 may be made small and circular, being only sufiiciently large to permit of the passage through it of the eye or link on the outside of the guard 10. Depending from the stop 13 there may be a ribbon 15, and this ribbon 15 may have thereon an ornamental terminal device 16. The form and construction of the members l5 and 16 in this form of fob-chain, if any such members are used, are of no importance with reference to the invention, but

are only shown to illustrate how the fobchain may be made ornamental and attractive.

lVhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In a watch-chain, the combination of an inner section of short length provided with means at its extremity for attaching it to a watch-ring, a guard on the section near its other extremity of considerable size adapted to bear against and thereby engage the walls of a pocket-aperture, a detachable outer section attached to theinner section just outside the guard, and an enlarged device or stop on the outer section.

2. A watch-chain comprising an inner section of short length provided with means at one extremity for attaching it to a watchring, a guard on the section near its other extremity of considerable size, a detachable outer section attached to the inner section just outside the guard on the inner section, and an enlarged device or stop on the outer section, the chain being adapted for use with a pocket in a garment which pocket has a wall having a small slot through which the chain proper may be passed but through which the guard and the stop device are too large to pass.

3. A watch-chain in two detachable sections, comprising an inner section having at one end means for attaching it to a watch and at the other end having a transversely-projecting guard and a chain-uniting device, and an outer section having at its attachable end a transversely-projecting guard and a chainuniting device adapted to engage detachably the chain-uniting device on the end of the inner section, the guards being of such size and form as adapts them severally to engage the opposite sides of a wall of a pocket through an aperture in which the chain-uniting devices pass.
