JOSEPH O. DEOKERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE VILLIAM MANN COMPANY, OF PENNSYLVANIA.
COPY-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 643,866, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed May 5, 1899- Serial No. 715,707. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH O. DECKERT, of the city of Philadelphia,in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Copy-Book, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the drawings accompanying this specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide a book in which copies of letters and other documents can be made on the sheets of tissue-paper forming part of the book in the same manner as in books at present in use that is to say, by the ordinary transfer of the inked writing or impressions from the original matter desired to be copied to the tissuesheets of the book, such sheets being, as is customary, first dampened to receive such transfer, or copies of writings may be made upon the tissue-paper sheets of my book by placing under the sheet to be impressed an oiled-paper-backing with a carbon-sheet interposed between the sheet to be written upon and the tissue-sheet upon which the carbon reproduction is to be made'and then writing, as usual, on the letter-head sheet or other sheet in the usual manner where a transfersheet is employed. In addition to such manner of employing my book the construction of it, in cooperation with its perforated leaves, is such as to permit of its use in another and novel manner-namely, the removal of the sheets from the book and the employment of same in a type-Writing machine for the impression upon them of a carbon-copy of any desired writing from the original sheet and the subsequent reinsertion of the sheet in the book and locking same therein by means of the locking device forming part of the book.
Reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, which together illustrate the nature and construction of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the book open, the back pieces being expanded and the leaves or sheets removed from the book. The sliding key in this figure is drawn out to the position which permits the impaling-posts to enter the enlarged openings in the key when the upper back piece and its key is pressed down upon said posts. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the book partly filled with leaves or sheets impaled upon the posts, the upper back piece, with its key, having been pressed down upon the posts and the key moved into its closed position, so as to effect the locking of the device, and in this view is also shown a flat spring, suitably curved, which is interposed between the upper back piece and the pile of sheets fora purpose to be hereinafter mentioned. Fig. 3 is a separate plan view of the sliding key. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the perforated sheets. Fig. 5 is a plan view of an alternative construction, the book being fully opened,
showing a single centrally-disposed impalingpost, a key having a single centrally-disposed opening for engagement therewith, the rivets and slotted openings in the key for engagement therewith in such alternative construction being disposed nearer the ends of the up per back piece and key, respectively, than when two impaling-posts are employed. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of a portion of the lowerback piece and one of the impaling-posts. Fig. 7 is a separate view of the spring already referred to, and Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the book.
The book is provided with two covers 1 and 2, flexibly attached, respectively, to the back pieces 3 and 4., which in turn are flexibly attached to the end piece 5.
The back piece 1 is provided with a sliding bar or key 6, which in turn is provided with slots 7 and 8 and is movably attached to the back piece 1 by means of rivets or screws 9 and 10, which pass through said slots and are firmly secured to said back piece. Said sliding bar or key is also provided near its oppoposite ends with openings 11 and 12, which have their sides parallel throughout part of their length and terminate in enlarged circular apertures and shown at 13 and 14, which latter register when the bar or key is drawn out to its outermost position, with posts at tached to the other back piece.
15 and 16 are posts which are attached to back piece 2 and are slotted, as shown at 17 18, near their upper ends, leaving the heads 19 20, which, as stated, register with openings 13 14 in the sliding bar when the latter is drawn out to its open position, and with recesses A and 13 formed in the upper back piece. The sliding bar or key is, for convenience of its manipulation, bent at a right angle to its out-er end, as shown at 21.
The leaves or sheets 22 of the book are provided near their inner edges with apertures or holes 23, which register with each other and adapt them to be telescoped over the impaling-posts 15 16.
The book is provided also with an index 24, which may be stitched or otherwise attached to the upper cover 1.
The manner of combining the sheets with the bookthat is, by telescoping same over the impaling-posts-is obvious, and the man ner of locking theposts together and again unlocking them, so as to permit the removal and reinsertion of one or more leaves, will be readily understoodthat is to say, the leaves having been placed on the impaling-posts, the sliding key occupying at the time the position shown in Fig. 1, the back piece 3, with the sliding key, is pressed down upon the impaling-posts, the heads of which enter and pass through the enlarged openings 13 14 of the key and into recesses A B in the upper back piece. The key then being pushed inwardly causes the engagement of the slots 17 18 of the posts with the slotted openings 11 12 of the key, thus eilecting the locking of the device.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 7, which illustrate or pile of leaves, which, as seen, presses down upon the leaves and obviates such liability.
While I have described and shown a sliding key having two slotted openings adapted to be engaged with two slotted posts and have shown and described sheets or leaves having two perforations near their inner ends, I do not wish to confine myself to such precise construction, since it is manifest that I may employ leaves having a single perforation centrally disposed combined with a centrallylocated post and key with a single centrallydisposed slotted opening for enga ement with such key, as illustrated in Fig. 0; but I pre fer the construction first herein described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a copy-book, the combination of the covers 1 and 2, the back pieces 3 and .1: having flexible connection therewith, the end piece 5 flexibly connected to the said back pieces, headed pins located on the inner face of one of the back pieces, a key having slots through which the headed pins pass thereby permitting a sliding movement of the said key, the key also having a slot provided with an enlarged opening, a headed post attached to the other of the said back pieces and adapted to engage the slot of the key for the purpose of 1 interlocking the parts, the said back piece 3 being provided with a recess to receive the head of the said pin, and a spring interposed between the upper back piece and the leaves of the book, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, on this 9th day of March, A. D. 1899.
