Nl ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS R. DIVINE, OF LOCH SI-IELDRAKE, NEW YORK.
FLAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,186, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed July 28 1899. $erial No. 725,432. (No model.)
' ence being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a threshing-flail,and more particularly to the means for uniting the staff and swingle thereof; and my invention consists in the combination, with the staff or swingle, of a socket-piece to receive and lit upon an end of the same, with rivet-bolts passing transversely through the socket-walls and the body of said staff or swingle, and an eyepiece provided with a rigid radial shank which extends through and has play in the head of said socket-piece and has a flange on its free end within said socket-piece, whereby the stafi and swingle furnished with the aforesaid devices may be united by a link connecting the eyepieoes carried, respectively, by the staff and swingle, and While the swivel-joint 'of each said shank of the respective eyepieces of the respective socket-pieces will permit the desired free rotation of the staff and swingle on their several eyepieces the swivel-joints are not liable to injury by contact with the threshing-floor.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the connected ends of a flail staff and swingle and showing the devices for such connection in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central sectional View of one of the socketpieces and its swivel-jointed eyepiece mounted on and rigidly secured to an end of the stalf or swingle in conformity to my invention.
A represents the staff, and B the swingle, of a flail.
O O are two similar socket-pieces which are usually and preferably cylindrical and one of which is adapted to receive and fit upon an end of the staif A and the other to receive and fit upon an end of the swingle B. Each of said socket-pieces is provided with lateral and diametrically coincident apertures in its side walls, as shown, so that a rivet-bolt 0, one or more, or equivalent means, may be passed transversely through the staff or swingle and the said apertures in the socket-pieces, and thus rigidly unite said socket-pieces to the staff and swingle.
O O are two similar eyepieces, each of which is provided with a radial shank c',which is rigid thereon and is preferably integral therewith, and the shank of each eyepiece passes loosely through the head of its socketpiece and is provided on its free end with a flange which plays within the socket-piece, and thus swivel-joints each said eyepiece to its socket-piece in a desirable manner for the purposes hereof.
At D is shown a link or links which loosely connect together the eyepieces O C.
It is evident that by means of the several parts constructed and combined as described a means of connection between the stafi and swingle of a flail is constituted which may be readily rigidly attached thereto and which, while it permits the desirable free rotation of the swingle and staff relatively to each other, is so formed, so far as the swivel-joints of the eyepieces to the socket-pieces are concerned, that such joints are prevented from direct contact with the threshing-floor when the flail is in use, whereby the durability and efficiency of the implement are promoted.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a flail the combination with the stafi or swingle, of a socket-piece to receive and fit upon an end of the same with a rivet bolt, or bolts, passed transversely through the socketwalls and the body of said staff or swingle, and an eyepiece provided with a rigid radial shank which reaches through and has play in the head of said socket-piece and has a flange on its free end playing within said head; substantially as and for the purpose specified.
SILAS R. DIVINE.
