IINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. DUNLAP, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MINERS LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,112, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed SeptemberlS, 1898- Serial No. 690,835. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in miners lamps, and has for its object the addition to such lamps of a shield or protecting-plate adapted to prevent the flame from coming into contact with the miners hat.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a top plan view of a miners lamp having my im provement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, the plane of section being indicated by the line II II, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the lamp.
The lamp as regards its body 1 and spout 2, lid 3, and attaching-hook 4 is constructed in the usual or any suitable manner. The shield is preferably made of metal and circular in outline, as shown. A hole is formed in this disk or shield for the reception of the spout and is so located that when slipped to the proper position on the spout the lower edge of the disk will be on a level with the bottom of the lamp. The disk is provided along the that on the opposite side of the notches in the opposite direction. These flanges can be shaped to fit the spout tightly and prevent the disk from being shifted to an angular position with relation to the spout. A brace having a curved port-ion 7, adapted to fit the body of the can-legs 8 with outturned ends, is riveted to the body above the spout and to the disk, thereby firmly securing the latter in position.
I claim herein as my invention- A miners lamp in combination with. a disk or shield having an opening for the reception of the spout and provided with oppositelyprojecting bearing-pieces or flanges, and a brace secured to the lamp and the disk, substantially as set forth.
, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM A. DUNLAP.
