GEORGE MILLER MARSHALL, OF EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.
SIPECIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 642,240, dated January 30, 1900.
Application led August 25, 1899. Serial No. 728,430. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE MILLER MAE- sHALL, a subject ot the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to roofs for buildings of various kinds and forms; and the object thereof is to provide roofs of this class composed of tiling, the roof-frames and tiling and the means for holding the tiling in place being of improved form and construction, whereby a perfectly-tight roof is produced.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a cross-section of a roof constructed according to myinvention Fig. 2, a plan view of a part of the roof-frame, showing the tiling in place thereon; Fig. 3, a section on the line 23 3 of Fig 2, and Fig. 4 a detail of a part of the construction shown in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown a roof-frame consisting of a horizontal member 5 and an upwardly-inclined member G,which meet at the apex of the roof, as shown at 7, and secured to this frame are horizontal cleats or strips S, preferably composed of metal, and any desired numberof which may be employed, the spaces between said cleats or strips being regulated by the width of the tilings employed.
The tilings 9 are placed on the cleats or strips S longitudinally thereof, and cross cleats or strips 10 are secured to the horizontal cleats or strips 8 over the abutting ends of the tilings 9. The tilings 9 are so formed that the upper edge of each is overlapped by the lower edge of the tiling placed thereover,
as shown at 11 in Fig. 3, the said edges of said tilings being beveled, so as to permit of this operation, and the cross cleats or strips 10 overlap the abutting ends of the tilings 9 and are secured to the horizontal cleats or strips S by screws or rivets 12 or in any desired manner.
The apex-rail 13 is substantially T-shaped in cross-section, and the central web 14 thereof is between the tilings 9 of the upper rows on each side of the roof, and the said apexrail or the top thereof is preferably convexeconcave in cross-section, as shown in Fig. et,
and by means of this construction the roof is made perfectly Water-tight.
It will be understood that the tilings D are cemented in place, and the cross cleats or strips 10 are also cemented to the abutting ends of the tilings.
It will thus be seen that I provide a roof which is strong and durable and also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be apparent that changes in and modications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrilicing :its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A roof composed of longitudinal strips, tilings laid longitudinally on said strips, and the ends of which abut, the top and bottom sides or edges of which being beveled to overlap, and cross-strips secured to said horizontal strips and overlapping the abutting ends of said tilin gs, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of August, 1899.
GEORGE MILLER MARSHALL.
Witnesses:
P. MACNAB, JAMES WILsoN.
