Be it known that I, EATON DAWSON BoUD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Mercer, in the 'county of Madison and State of Tennessee,` have invented a new and useful Fireplace, of which the following is a speciication.
The invention relates to improvements in replaces.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of ireplaces and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one capable of heating one or more rooms by either hot air or steam and adapted to be readily employed for all kinds of cooklllg;
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims-hereto appended.
In thedrawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fireplace constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, the oven bein gin position and the grate being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2, the grate being shown. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2, the oven being removed and a reservoir being substituted for the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional View.

l designates a chimney having a fireplaceopening which is divided into upper and lower portions by central horizontal partitions 2 and 3, spaced apart to form a iiue. The top of the flreplace-opening is closed by an upper horizontal partition 4, and the flue formed by the lpartitions 2 and 3 communicates at its back with a vertical pipe or flue 5, which extends through the top partition 4 to convey smoke and other products of combustion to the upper portion of the chimney. The lower end of the vertical pipe or flue 5 is tted in an openin g of the horizontal plate or partition 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. The lower portion 6 of the fireplace-opening is adapted to 4receive the back or plate 7loeing arranged in grooves S, and the inner edges are interlocked and overlapped, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The inner edge 9 of one of the sections is provided with a lower deep recess, and the edge 10 of the other section is provided at its upper or rear face with a'shallow recess, and the walls at the inner ends of the recesses and the edges ofv the sections are correspondingly beveled to interlock the secl tions and form atight joint. The upperedge of the plate or back is provided at its rear face with a groove 11, which receives the front edge of the horizontal partition 3,where by the latter is supported. This partition 3 is provided at its rear edge with an upwardlyextending flange 12, having a horizontal tongue 13, which lits in a corresponding groove of the adjacent partition 2. The flange 12 is provided at opposite sides of the tongue 13 with supporting-shoulders and the partition 2 rests upon it, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and is held against outward movement by the said tongue. The s ide edges ofthe horizontal partitions 2 and 3 are arranged in suitable grooves'or recesses of the walls of the ireplace, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The upper one of the central partitions is supported by parallel bars 14, arranged at the center of the iiue and at opposite sides of the same, and provided with bearings foi` front and'rear dampers 15 and 16, adapted to .control the heat and designed to direct the same through an oven 17, as hereinafter described. The front of the horizontal ue is closed by a horizontal strip 18, extending outward and downward from the front edge of the partition 2 and forming a depending ange, which is spaced from the upper edge of the back or plate 7 to provide a passage for the products of combustion.

The products of' combustion pass upward behind the horizontal strip 18 and enter the horizontal flue 19, and then pass out through the vertical pipe or flue 5, unless they are caused to take a circuitous course through the oven by the dampers. Each damper consists of a plate 20, journaled at its ends in suitable bearings of the adjacent bars 14, and the outer journal of each damper is extended to form a crank 21, which is connected with the lower end of a vertically-arman ged operating-lever 22, fulcrumed on the upper partition or plate and extending through the same. The upper portion of the lever forms a handle and is adapted to be oscillated to open and close the damper. The front damper 15 is located in advance of the opening 25 of the partition 2, and the rear damper is located in rear of the same. The opening 25 is adapted to receive lids 26 and 27, which are removed when the oven 17 is employed. The oven 17 is composed of inner and outer shells, the inner shell or lining being spaced from the top and sides of the outer shell to form a passage around the oven. The bottom of the oven is provided with openings 28,and when the dampers are closed the heat, smoke, and other products of combustion are caused to pass upward through the oven,or, rather, through the passage formed by the outer shell and the lining, the products of combustion entering the opening 28, lying in advance of the rear damper, and passing out through the other opening 28a, lVhen the dampers are open, the products of combustion pass directly to the vertical pipe or fiue 5 and escape into the upper portion of the chimney. The oven is provided at its front with a door 29, and it has a removable plate or lid 30 at its top to afford access to the space or passage between the outer shell and inner lining of' the oven, so that the said passage may be cleaned when necessary.
The lids 2G and 27 are of the usual construction, the lid 27 forming a center piece or bridge, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
` The upper or heating compartment 3l ofthe fireplace may be closed at the front by a door or plate 32, arranged between vertical bars 33 and provided at its upper edge with dowelpins 34, adapted to fit in sockets of the top partition 4, as vclearly'illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. The vertical strips 33 are arranged at opposite sides of the upper compartment of the fireplace, and the top and side edges ot the door or plate 32 are recessed to rovide flanges 34 which over-A lap the adjacent faces of the fireplace. The lower edge of the door isprovided with a recess 35, forming an aperture for the admission of cold air, and a loop 36 extends outward from the plate or door at a point above the aperture and is adapted to be engaged by a lifter or other suitable device for removing the door. The necessary draft is created by a removable blower 36, consisting of aplate detachably suspended from the strip 18 and provided at the bottom of the fireplace or hearth with an opening for the admission of air. The blower is provided at its upper edge with a hook 37, which engages a suitable aperture or socket of the horizontal strip 1S, whereby it is detachably supported in position, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the accom panying drawings.
Air enters the upper portion or compartment of the fireplace through the aperture formed by the recess 35, and after it becomes heated it is conveyed through suitable pipes 3S to the portions of a building to be heated, the fireplace being adapted to heat one or more rooms of a building. The pipes 38 are provided with horizontal branches eXtending through the strips 33 and adapted to be connected by suitable couplings 39 with a tank orreservoir 40 when it is desired to provide steam heat. rlhe tank or reservoir, which forms a boiler, is detachably arranged within the upper portion of the fireplace when the oven is removed, and it is provided With lower pipes 41 and 42, coupled with suitable pipes 43 and 44 and designed, respectively, forsupplying the tank or boiler with water and for enabling the same to be withdrawn therefrom. The tank or boiler is also provided at its front with a suitable gage 45 to enable the quantity of water contained within it to be readily ascertained.
When the fireplace is employed in double tenement-houses and analogous places, the back 46 of the fireplace may be removed in order that heat from the fireplace may be util'- ized for warming the adjacent room.
It will be seen that the fireplace is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted for general cooking purposeswith and without an oven, and that it is adapted` to supply either hot-air or steam heat to the different rooms of a house. It will also be apparent that the dampers control the passage of the smoke, heat, and other products of combustion, and that they may be arranged to cause the same to pass directly out of the vertical pipe or flue or around the oven.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the 4scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages o'f this invention.
What is claimed is- 1.v The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of horizontal partitions forming a flue and dividing the fireplace into upper and lower portions, an inclined back extending downward and rearward from the front ol' the lower one of the said partitions, and a fiue or pipe extending f'rom the upper one of the said partitions to the upper portion of the chimney and communicating with the space between the partitions, and the stovelids mounted on the partition at the top of the horizontal flue,substantially as described.

chimney, of horizontal partitions 2 and 3 spaced apart to form a horizontal flue, and dividing the iireplace into upper and lower portions, the lower portion being adapted to receive a grate, and the upper portion being adapted to receive either an oven or a tank or boiler, stove-lids mounted on the partition 2, a pipe or flue extending from the horizontal flue to the upper portion ot' the chimney, and pipes extending from the upper portion of the fireplace and adapted to convey either hot air or steam from the same to the rooms to be heated, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of the upper and lower horizontal partitions 2 and 3 forming a horizontal lue and dividing the ireplace into upper and lower portions, the lower portion being adapted to receive the grate and the upper portion being adapted to be used for heating or cooking purposes, and a pipe or flue extending from the horizontal flue to the upper portion of the chimney, substantiallyl as described.
4. The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partitions 2 and 3 spaced apart to form a horizonal iiue, an inclined back 7 provided at its upper edge with a groove to receive the front edge of the horizontal partition 3, and a fiue extending from the horizontal flue to the upper portion of the chimney, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the iireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partition 3 provided at its back with a vertical flange having a tongue, the horizontal partition 2 spaced from the partition 3 to form a horizontal flue, and provided with a groove to receive the said tongue,an inclined back extending downward from the front edge of the partition 3, and the horizontal strip 18 arranged at the front of the horizontal flue, substantially as described.
6. The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partitions 2 and 3 spaced apart to form a horizontal flue and dividing the fireplace into upper and lower portions, the upper portion being adapted to receive either a boiler or an oven and the upper partition being provided with an opening, removable stove-lids fitted in the said opening, and the front and rear dampers, substantially as described.
'7. The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partitions 2 and 3, spaced apart to form a horizontal flue, the partition 2 being provided with an opening, the bars interposed between the upper and lower partitions and located at the ends of the said opening and at a point between the ends of the same, the front and rear dampers supported by the bars, and means for operating the dampers, substantially as described.
8. The combination with the iireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partitions 2 and 3, spaced apart to form a horizontal flue, the partition 2 being provided with an opening, the bars interposed between the upper and lower partitions and located at the ends of the said opening and at a point between the ends of the saine, dam pers journaled on the said bars and provided at their outer ends with cranks, and operating levers connected with the cranks, substantially as described.
9. The combination with the fireplace of a from the horizontal flue to the upper portion of the chimney, the strips 33 arranged at opposite sides of the upper portion of the tireplace and adapted to receive a door between them, a horizontal bar arranged at the front edges of the partitions 2 and 3 and adapted to have a blower suspended from it, and pipes extending from the bars 33, substantially as described.

The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partitions 2 and 3 spaced apart to form a horizontal iue, the partition 2 being provided with an opening, front and rear dampers, and an oven arranged over the'opening and provided with a passage extending around it and terminating in openings communicating with the opening of the upper partition 2, substantially .as described.

The combination with the fireplace of a chimney, of the horizontal partitions 2 and 3 spaced apart to form a horizontal iue and di viding the fireplace into upper and lower portions, the partition 2 being provided with an opening, front and rear dampers, and the oven composed of an outer shell and an inner lining spaced apart to provide a passage for the products of combustion, said oven being provided at its bottom with openings and'having a removable lid at its top communicating with the said passage, substantially as de= scribed.
