SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,472, dated January 16, 1900.
Application filed May 15, 1899- To all wit 0721 it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH S. SHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laramie,in the county ofAlbany and State of Wyoming, have invented a new and useful Hame- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hame-fasteners; and the object in view is to provide a simple,v cheap, and efficient hame-fastener the construction of which does away with all pivots, which are liable to become loosened and detached.
The several parts of the heme-fastener are so related that they are permanently and inseparably attached to each other during the process of manufacture, and thus it is impossible for any of said part-s tov become lost.
The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of the ensuing description.
The invention consists in a hame-fastener embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hame-fastener constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, illustrating the arrangement of the parts when the device is locked and inopera. tive. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the double hook. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the single book. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the hame-fastener, illustrating the position the parts assume as the device is being detached from the hames.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a double hook comprising parallel members having terminal hooks 2, adapted to engage an eye on one of a pair of hames, the parallel members having their shanks bent intermediate their ends and connected at their extremities by an integral transverse portion or end cross-bar 3. to form the parallel members, hooks, and end cross-bar or connecting portion.
The operating-lever, which is pivotallyconnected with the end cross-bar of the double hook, is provided with aterminal eye 5,formed by bending the material of the lever, the eye being bent to pass around and embrace the end cross-bar 3 of the double hook. The le= ver is also bent intermediate its ends to form a fulcrum extension 6, arranged at a slight distance from the terminal eye and provided itself with an eye for the reception of the end cross-bar of the looped shank 7 of the single hook 8. This lever is constructed of a single length of metal doubled to form two side portions, which are contiguous and which are bent at substantially right angles at intermediate points to form the fulcrum extension 6. The extremities of the metal of which the lever is constructed are coiled or bent upon themselves to form the terminal eye 5.
The single hook Sis preferably constructed of a single piece of metal bent to form the looped shank 7 and also to provide the outer portion or the hook proper, which may be en'- gaged with any one of the links of a chain attached or to be attached to one of a pair of hames.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the hooks are pivotally connected with and inseparably attached to the lever during the process of bending the lever to form the terminal eye and fulcrum extension, thus doingaway entirely with separate pivots, rendering it impossible for the device to get out of order or the parts thereof to become separated by reason of the loss of a pivot, and also reducing the cost of manufacture of the complete article. Another important feature of the invention resides in the cooperation between the parallel members of the'double hook and the end cross-bar of the single hook.

This cooperation and action is possible by reason of the fact that the parallel members of the double hook pass through the looped shank of the single hook, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the said parallel members cooperate with the end cross-bar of the single hook in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
