NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,376, dated January 16, 1900.

To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. DODDRIDGE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Red Cliff, in the county of Eagle and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in nut-locks, and more especially to that particular variety known as base-washer nutlocks, the object being to provide a simple, strong, and inexpensive lock for the purpose named which can be easily applied and will be effectual in accomplishing the results sought to be attained by such an article.
With the foregoing object in View my invention consists in certain .novel features of construction and combinations of parts,which will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional View of one form of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the pronged washer or nutand clamp-plate, respectively; and Fig. 4 is a modification.
A represents a bolt with the usual thread 1 thereon.
B is a clamp-plate preferably made of malleable iron and having a hole 2 therein to receive the bolt and one or more smaller holes 3 for a purpose to be mentioned. The clampplate serves, in the first place, as an ordinary washer, but more especially it is designed to lock the nut upon the bolt, and to this end it is constructed with one or more points 4, adapted to be bent up against the side of the nut when the latter is screwed tightly into place. The clamp-plate may be formed in any convenient shape, as square, triangular,
or in other form.
0 indicates a pronged nut or washer hav ing a central hole 6 to receive the bolt and provided with one or more prongs 7 of hardened steel to correspond with and pass through the hole or holes 3 in the clamp-plate. These prongs are longer than the thickness of the clamp-plate and pointed or sharpened at their ends for the purpose of penetrating the wood or material with which they come in contact when in position.
The locking is done in the following Way: The bolthaving been passed through the timber, rail, or what not, the clamp-plate is first placed upon it, and then the washer, with the prongs, inserted through the holesv in the clamp-plate. Finally the nut8 is screwed on tightly, thus forcing the prongs into the wood or iron and in that way locking the clampplate against turning. The point or points on the clamp-plate are then bent immediately adjacent to the edge of the nut and washer until said point lies flat against the nut, whereby the latter is locked permanently in place.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the clamp-plate has no holes for receiving prongs. In this form the clam p-plate is preferably made triangular in shape, one side of the triangle being adapted to rest against the base-flange of the rail or fish-plate, this form of nut-lock be ing adapted for use with the fish-plates of rails. In this form the pronged washer may be dispensed with and the point or points on the clamp-plate are bent to lie flat against the nut to lock it.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with a bolt and nut, of an apertured clamp-plate having a point on one side thereof, a pronged washer, the prongs of which are of greater length than the thickness of the clamp-plate, said prongs being adapted to be embedded in the part through which the bolt passes whereby the washer and clamp-plate are locked against turning, said plate and Washer held in place by the nut and the point on the clamp-plate bent against the side of the nut to lock it against turning.
2. The combination with a bolt and nut, of an apertured clamp-plate having a point or points on the'side thereof, a pronged washer, the prongs of which are adapted to enter apertures in the clamp-plate and be embedded JOHN S. DODDRIDGE.
