BICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,884, dated January 9, 1900. Application led March 7, 1898. Serial No. 672,882. (No model.)
bicycles, and more particularly it/pertains to the hangers and bearings for pedal-cranks, the objectbeing to provide means for removably securing the crank-hanger to the bicycle-frame; and it consists, essentially, in

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in side elevation of the frame. Fig. 2 is a View in front elevation of a portion of the frame, with the pedal-shaft in position therein. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the bearing. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the frame connection, and Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the detachable hanger or barrel.
A represents the frame of the machine. This comprises the usual tubing, arranged in the usual diamond shape. B is a connection for holding the several tubes of the frame together at the pedal-crank. The connection comprises the rounded portion 1, which constitutes a socket, and the several thimbles 2 2, corresponding in number. to the several tubes of the frame centering at that point and constructed and adapted to be inserted into the ends of said tubes and shrunk, brazed, or otherwise secured rigidly therein, whereby to form a secure `and permanent union at'this point. f

Through the hanger the crank-axle is passed, it being provided with the bearing-cups l2 l2 and the ball-bearings 13 13, as customary in all modern machines of this type. These parts might obviously be modified, as well as the other details of the invention, Without departing from the spirit and scope of my' invention, and hence I do not Wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bicycle, the combination with a frame, of a connection for securing certain of the tubes ot the frame together, said connection having an open half-round socket, and a hanger comprising a barrel and shank, the barrel fitting the socket and the shank entering one of the tubes of the frame and removably secured therein.
2. In a bicycle, the combination with a frame, and a connection comprising the rounded socket portion and thimbles secured in the contiguous ends of certain tubes forming the frame, a hanger comprising a barrel and shank adapted to enter the socket portion and one of the tubes respectively and means for holding the hanger removably in place.
