Nrrn STATES ALEXANDER FORIN, OF NELSON, CANADA.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,164, dated December 12, 1899'- Application fil d, March 2c, 1899, Serial No. 709,868. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER FoRIN, of
Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, have inferent elevations in a simple and efficient manner.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of the parts, whichI shall first describe and then particularly point out in the accompanying claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the holder for the lower sash shown detached. Fig. 2 is a detail side View of the lower pawl. Fig. 3 is an edge View thereof. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the lower holder detached. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a face view of the upper sash-holder. Fig. 7 is a side view thereof. Fig. 8 is a sectional side elevation of the same in looking engagement with a notched strip. Fig. 9 is a face view of said strip, and Fig. 10 is a face view of a window-sash with my improved sash-holder shown in looking engagement with the mid-rail lower sash.
Recesses are made in the window-jamb J and between the guiding-strips for the sashes to receive the casings G and O, in which are located the fastening and holding devices, the lower casin g C being arrangedfor the fastening devices of the lower sash and the upper casing 0 being adapted for the fastening devices of the upper sash, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. These casings are 'formed with journal-bearings d and d, in
which are journaled spindles aand 0., respectively, and wedge-shaped pawls A and A are secured fixedly to or formed integral with such spindles.
Notched strips F and F are secured to the stiles of the sashes adjacent the casings C and O, the pawls being brought into engagement with the notches f and f thereof to hold the sashes at different elevations.
- In order to normallyhold the pawls in engagement with the notches, I provide leafsprings eand e, which normally bear against the rear sides of the pawls when the latter are in upright position, and in order to release the pawls at any time to move the sashes toward their closed positions I form non-circular openings 1) and b in the spindles a and a, respectively, such openings being arranged to receive the correspondingly-shaped ends of handle-rods B and B. These latter are eX- tended into the room through the jamb and have knobs E and E on their inner ends and escutcheons D and D, in which they turn. One of the principal objects of my invention is to so mount the lower pawl that it will hold the lower sash securely locked when in closed position, and to this end I locate the casing O at such a point in the jamb that when the pawl Ais reversed or turned down, as shown in Fig. 10, its point will rest upon the upper or mid-rail of the lower sash, thereby preventin g the lower sash from being raised until the pawl is turned and freed from said rail. It will be seen, therefore, that the lower pawl A is not only useful in holding the lower sash raised at different elevations, but is capable of performing the additional function of locle ing the lower sash closed.
Having thus described myinventiorn'what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sash holder and fastener, comprising a bearing in the window-jamb at a point above the lower sash when it is closed, a pawl rotatably mounted in the bearing and normally engaging said lower sash when the latter is raised, the said pawl being of such length. that when turned down or reversed into vertical position its free point will abut against the mid-rail of the lower sash whereby to fasten such sash in closed position, as set forth.
