No. 636,3I4. Patented ANo 7 |899 A. w. BlLLMAN. v'
HOSE GOUPLING. (Anne-dion med Aug. 1, 1599.)
(No Model.)
A TTORNE YS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST WILHELM BILLMAN, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
HosE-CoUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,314, dated November 7, 1899.
Application filed August l, 1899. Serial No. 725,778. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WILHELM BILL- MAN, manufacturer, of 35 Master Samuelsgatan, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a modification of the hose-coupling described in Letters Patent No. 590,956, and has for its objectto simplify said coupling and to provide a better protection for the parts actuating the couplinglatches. The coupling described in the aforesaid patent consists of two lugs projecting axially diametrically opposite each other from the head end of each section or coupling-half, there being in one of said lugs a latch movable about tangentially to the circumference of the coupling sleeve or section, against the rear end of which latch bears one end of a bell-crank lever fulcrumed on a shaft or pin parallel to the axis of the sleeve, while its other end vis located in an opening in the sleeve and is forced outward by an elastic ring inserted in the mouth of the aforesaid sleeve, and the other lug is provided with a recess into which the latch of the other coupling-half can snap when the two halves are pushed together. According to the present invention the bell-crank mentioned is replaced by a spring and the coupling consequently obtaining a smaller number of projecting parts is not so easily injured or brought out o f order.
In the accompanying drawings a symmetrical hose-coupling arranged according to the present invention is shown in Figure l in a side View with the two halves or sections coupled together. In Fig. 2 is shown one of the coupling-halves viewed from one end, and in Fig. 3, partially in section, one of the coupling-halves with the coupling-latch in theposition occupied at the moment when the sections of the coupling are being united or disconnected.
a. are the coupling .halves or sections with their lugs b c, and d is the latch, movable in one of the latter about tangentially or concentrically to the circumference of the section. According to the present invention the said latch is not, as in my Patent No. 590,956, operated by a rocking lever, but directly by means of a spring, which may be a spiral spring f, located in the lug, as illustrated in the drawings, or any other spring protected in a similar manner and acting to push the `latch outward, as shown in Fig. 2. The latch has a handle c, by means of Which it may be Withdrawn.
g is an aperture in the lug c, into which the latch d, belonging to the other coupling-half, will snap when the ends of the two sections are pushed together.
In order that the latches mayfreadily engage with the corresponding apertures as the sections of the coupling are united, the ends of the latches should be slanted. In disconnecting the sections the handles e of the two latches are pulled, the latter being consequently withdrawn'out of their engagement, so that the sections of the coupling may be pulled apart.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the saine is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- An improved symmetrical hose-coupling provided with lugs b, c projecting axially diametrically opposite each other from the head end of each coupling half or section a, and in one of said lugs having a latch d movable about peripherally or concentrically to the circumference of the coupling sleeve or section and actuated by a spring f pushing the latch outward so as to cause it, when the coupling-halves are forced together, to snap into an aperture g arranged in the corresponding lug c of the other coupling half or section.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST WILHELM BILLMAN.
