SUPPORT FOR RAILWAY SWITCH-OPERATING WIRES AND CONDUITS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,353, dated October 24, 1899. Application filed August 7, 1899. Serial No. 726,362. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. SCHMEI- sER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Supports for Railway-Switch-Operating Wires and Conduits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of foundations or superstructures for the support of switeh operating wires and wire-conduits, and has particular relation to that class of superstructures or foundations which are designed to support piping and brackets for carrying wires controlled by interlocking switch-operating mechanism.
The objects of my invention are to provide a superstructure of this character of superior construction and arrangement, to produce the same of such material and to so unite the parts thereof as to obviate any tendency toward rust, decay, or wear, to so construct the same as to insure its proper retention in the ground, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objectsI accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved supporting device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view. Fig. 4. is a plan view with the top section removed, and Fig. 5 is a similar plan View showing a modification in the form of the body-sections.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I preferably construct the body of the foundation-or superstructure in two vertical sections, which are indicated, respectively, at 1 and 2, these upright and vertical body sections being formed of hard-burned clay and preferably of the material known as vitrified clay. As indicated in the drawings, the outer portion of each of the sections is flaring or enlarged laterally, and the vertical ends or faces of the narrower inner portions are adapted to abut is adapted to receive a correspondinglyshaped tongue at of the section 1. On the outer and wider side of each of the sections 1 and 2 I provide a vertical groove 01' recess 5, the latter being, as indicated at 5", continued across the under sides of said sections.
Covering the upper sides of the sections 1 and 2 is an oblong top block 6, which is preferably of wood. This block is united with the upper sides of the sections 1 and 2, and said sections are firml y united with each other through the medium of a yoke or U-shaped bolt, which is indicated at 7. The lower transverse portion of this bolt extends within the bottom grooves 5 of the sections, while the vertical arms of said bolt bear within the side grooves 5, the upper portions of said bolt-' arms passing through the end portions of the top block 6 and having their threaded terminations provided with nuts 8.
Foundations or superstructures formed as above described are adapted to be buried in suitable excavations which are formed at desirable intervals alongside of a railway-track. The upper portions of the top blocks, however, are above or on a level with the groundsurface and are adapted to have secured thereto in any desirable manner suitable forms of wire or pipe supporting brackets. (Not herein shown.)
From the construction above described, it will readily be seen that by so producing the body or that portion of the foundation which is embedded in the earth or play, the same will be impervious to the action of moisture, heat, and cold and that it will therefore be exceedingly strong and durable. It will also be observed that in case the top block should become worn or rotted it may readily be replaced by a new one with comparatively slight expense.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings I have shown the sections as formed hollow or with openings 9 extending therethrough, which may facilitate the uniform burning of the same. It is also obvious that instead of forming the clay body in two sections, as herein shown and described, the same might be produced in. one section. H0weve1', the employment of two sections is considered preferable in view of the fact that the same may be more effectively burned.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a superstructure for the support of switch-operating wires, the combination of a body form ed of hard-burned clay, a top block and a bolt embracing the sides and lower end of said body and uniting said top block therewith, substantially as specified.
2. In a superstructure for the support of switch-operating wires, the combination with the vertical body-sections l and 2 formed of hard-burned clay, of a top block and a yokebolt embracing opposite sides and the lower ends of said sections and uniting said top :5 block therewith, substantially as specified.
