Description

No. 634,495. Patented'Oct. 10, I899. R. BRUNNEE. v
SCALE BEAM.
(Application filed Mar. 4, 1898.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES: INVENTOH I r/Qu W fiw 4 M- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD ERUNNEE, or GOTTINGEN, GERMANY.
SCALE-BEAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,495, dated October 10, 1899. Application filed March 4:, 1898. Serial No. 672,616. (No model-l To a, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD BRUNNEE, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Gottingen, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Scale-Beam, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scale-beams for the following objects: first, to make the beams as light as possible in order to enable one to use them for precise instruments; second, to make these lightly-constructed beams absolutely resistant to deflection in the plane of oscillation and laterally to the same. I attain these obj ects by the devices represented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a view of the scale-beam in its plane of oscillation Fig. 2, a view of the same seen from above, and Fig. 3 a front view.
I believe that the form shown by Figs. 1 to 8 is the most suitable for the intended purpose.
The scale-beam frame substantially consists of the open-work metallic pieces or of triangular shape, the lower edge forming a broken line 0 p q. On the projecting ends 6 e knife-edges are fixed in any suitable mannerf0r instance, by means of screws, pins, shoes, or the like. The central portions 1) p of the lower edges 0 p q are spread apart, while the upper edges 12 to u w are straight and united, the whole constituting a hat or hollow pyramidal shape, Figs. 2 and 3. Be-
tween the central spread-apart portions p p of the lower edges 0 p q a knife-edged crosspiece 5 is arranged, being fixed by means of screws or rivets, the ends 6 e of the pyramid being supported by a rod Z, with a knee projecting downward, at which the pointer j is attached, the whole being constructedin openwork form, as described, for the purpose of making the apparatus as light in weight as possible.
The whole structure may be obtained, for instance, by two plates being cut to the form required and punched and shaped as described in the specification and represented by the drawings, the lower rod Z being thus cut to the right length and bent or, if preferred, cut to the required shape out of one piece of plate. The upper edgeso u aw are soldered together after the ends of rod Z have been placed and fixed between the ends of the said two open-work plates. This structure being ready, the said three knife -edges-and the pointer are affixed, as described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A scale-beam frame composed of open-work metallic pieces united along their upper edges and at their ends, and spread apart at the central portion of their lower edges by a knife-edged cross-piece, thus constituting a hollow pyramidal shape, alower downwardlydepending supporting-piece joined at its ends to those of the united open-work metallic pieces, upwardly-facing knife-edges supported at the ends of the frame, and a pointer united to said lower supporting-piece at the center of the latter, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD BRUNNI JIC.
