SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 634,367, dated October 3, 1899.

To all whom it may concer/t:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. OBRIEN, of Cairo, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved OlutchfPulley, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to in'lprovements in friction clutch-pulleys for belting, and the Objectis to provide a pulley of this class which shall be comparatively simple in its construction and therefore not liable to get out of order, that will have an equal friction-pressure on both sides, and in which the strain of the belt will be directly in the center. y
I will describe a clutch-pulley embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accom panyiug drawings, forming a partof this speci lication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a section through the line 1 1 of Fig. 2 of acluteh-pulley embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
'Ihe pulley comprises two side pieces or webs 1 2, which may be in the form of spokewheels or in the form of solid disks. Each side portion or web has a hub 3, which loosely engages on the driving-shaft 4t, and to the periphery of these webs the pulley-rim 5 is attached by means of bolts 6. tached to the shaft 4, between the side pieces or webs 1 2, is a friction-disk '7, having annular projections 8 9 near its periphery. projections are here shown as V-shaped in cross-section, but obviously they may be otherwise shaped without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Attached to the inner surface of the side piece or web 2 is a bearing-ring 10, which may consist of wood. This bearing-ring 10 has an annular channel on its inner side Within which the projection 9 of the friction-disk is designed to engage. Mounted to slide relatively to the side portionor web 1 is a bearing-ring 11, also of wood and having on its inner side an annular channel to receive the projection 8 of the friction-disk. From the bearing-ring 11 stems 12 extend outward through openings in` the side piece or web k1 and have piv- Rigidly at- These otal connection at their outer ends with angle-levers 13, pivoted between lugs 14, formed on the hub 3 of the side piece or web 1. From the centrally-disposed members of th'ese angle-levers links 15 extendend have pivotal connection with a sleeve 16, loosely mounted on the shaft 4. This sleeve ismade quite long, so as tohave a considerable bearing on the shaft, and preferably it will be made in two sections, as indicated, so that it may be readily placed on the shaft.
Seated in an annular channel formed in the sleeve 16 is a shifting-ring 17, with which the ordinary shifting-leveris designed to engage. Springs 18 are seated in recesses formed in the huh of the friction-disk 7 and bear at their outer ends against the side portions or webs, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. When the parts are in the position indicated in Fig. 1, the disk 7 will of course rotate with the shaft 4 and the pulley will remain stationary, as will also the sleeve 16 and its connections withthe pulley. When it is desired that the pulley shall be rotated, the sleeve 16 is to be moved toward the pulley by means of its shifting-lever, and this movement of the sleeve will rock the angle-lever 13, which will force the bearing-ring 11 into clo'se engagement with the friction-disk,` and a slightly farther inward movement of the sleeve will cause the pulley to be moved in such direction as to engage the friction-ring 10 with the projection 9 of the friction-disk. When the sleeve 16 is moved in the opposite direction, the springs 1S will move the pulley to its loose or stationary position.
As the friction-disk is arranged in the center of the pulley it is evident that the strain of the belt will be equally distributed across the pulley.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A clutchpulley, comprising side pieces loosely mounted on a shaft, a rim rigidly secured to both of the side pieces, a frictiondisk rigidly secured to the shaft between the side pieces and within the pulley-rim, a bearing-ring attached to the inner side of one of the side pieces and adapted for engagement.
