" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC ERNST KUHN, OF UNTENKATTERNBERG, GERMANY.
POCKET-KNIFE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent N0.,633,854, dated September 26,1899.
. Application filed navemter'zi, 1393. 7 Serial intention. on model.)
To all zolwm it concern: I I Be it known'that I, ERNST Kl j'HN, a subject of the King of Prussia, GermanEmperor, re-
siding at Untenkatternberg, near Solingen,
in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives, (for which I have I applied for patents in Germany July 30, 1898,
and in England October 27, 1898,) of which v p r I handle, a blade pivoted therein, and an arm the following is a specification. 1
This invention consists of a pocket-knife in which a very simple substitution is provided for the springs usually employed and by which device the knife-blade can be held firmly in position. i V
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-,-
Figures 1 and 2 are side views of the knife 9 in the closed and open position, respectively, and Fig. 3 is aback view of the knife in the half-open position.
a is the knife-handle; b, the blade; 0, a pin to which the blade is firmly attached and which carries on the outside of the knifehandle a loop, clip, or eye f, the end of which is free to turn therein.
g is a projecting knob over the head of which the loop, clip, or eye f can be made to catch. To prevent the blade moving too far in the direction of the arrow k,a check-pin h is fixed ata little distance sidewise from the pin 0, as shown.
The method of opening and closing the knife is very simple. In order to open the kn ife, the" loop, clip, or eye f is first lifted over the knob g, when by turning the said loop, clip, or eye the pine, carrying the blade b, is turned. When the blade has reached the position shown in Fig. 2, the clip is again pressed down over the knob g, by which means the blade is held firmly in the open position. The loop,
clip, or eyebelng movable in the end of the pin a, a slight spring is obtained, causing it to catch firmly on the knob g. The opening of pocket-knives, which is often verytroublesome, will be greatly facili- "tated by the present invention, and a very considerable reduction in the cost of manu factors is obtained by dispensing with the springs which are usually employed in pocketknives.
What I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is--- -1. In a'pocket-knife, the combination of a mounted'on the pivot of the blade to swing therewith and capable of locking the blade in an open or closed position, substantially as described. 1 e
2. The combination of the knife-handle,the blade mounted to swing therein, and a member carried by the pivot of the blade to move with the blade, such memberserving to engage the handle to hold the blade in either of its two positions, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the knife-handle,the
blade mounted to swing therein, and a spring loop pi votally carried on the pivot of the blade and turning; with said pivot, the loop .being adaptedto engage the handle to hold the blade in either of its twoflpositions, substantially as described.
4;. The combination of the knife-handle,the blade mounted to swing therein, and a spring loop carried by the pivot of the blade and moving with the same, a pin formed on the handle and adapted to be engaged by the loop, whereby-t0 hold the blade in either of its, two positions, substantially asdescribed.
5. In a pocket-knife, the combination of a handle, a blade pivoted therein, and an arm.
connected with the blade and serving as a means'for moving and holding the blade.
In testimony whereof I. have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ERNST K'UHN.
