COMBINED ROCKING CHAIR AND BATH.
(Application filed Aug. 15, 1898.)

UNITED STATES PATE T FFICE.
RICHARD STRAUBE, OF LAUENSTEIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO CARL KURSAWE, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY.
COMBINED ROCKING-CHAIR AND BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,398, dated September 19, 1899.
Application filed August 15,1898. Serial No. 688,603. (No model.)
To n, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD STRAUBE, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Lauenstein, Saxony, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Rocking- Chair .and Bath, (for which application for Letters Patent has been made in Great Britain, No. 15,974, dated July 21, 1898; in German Empire, No. 5,348, dated February 10, 1898; in Austria, dated July 19, 1898; in Hungary, No. 10,323, dated July 20, 1898; in Switzerland, No. 18,927, dated July 21, 1898, and in France, No. 267,783, dated July 23, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination of a rocking-chair and bath having the appearance of a rocking-chair while combining theusefulness of both articles.
The accompanying drawings show the article in Figure 1 in front elevation as a rocking-chair, with the canvas or other covering forming the seat and back in place, Fig. 2 being a longitudinal vertical section of the article as a hip-batl1,with the canvas shown in full lines. 1
The bath A does not materially differ from the usual shape. It consists of a deep basin with rounded bottom, becoming fiat toward the back a. The front edge of the bath is preferably provided with a round beading (L2, constituting a comfortable support for the legs of the user. The bath is preferably made of sheet-zinc. The walls as far as they are visible, more particularly the side Walls a,
can be covered withwicker-work or painted to imitate it or ornamented in other desired manner.
The bath is built or let into the frame of the rocking-chair B and supported by it by'means of suitable supports, such as b b. The chair B is provided in front with a foot-rest 1). Owing to the curvature of its lower frame the bath can be used in different positions, so
that the back is at a greater or smaller angle relatively to the ground, so that the water fills up the front part of the bath or extends up the back. In the first case it constitutes a hip-bath, in the second a so-called body= bath. The chair, and therefore the bath, can be fixed in any desired position by means of blocks 0 c or adjustable supports on the frame of the chair or by similar means. This capability of occupying different positions is a great advantage of the new article over the ordinary hip-bath.
To facilitate emptying, a valve or screwplug may be arranged at the bottom of the bath.
Having emptied the bath, the article can be reconverted into a chair by attaching the canvas or seating D, by means of hooks d at its ends, to suitable parts of the framing. The seating extends in a curved line between the beading a and the upper part of the back of the chair, dipping somewhat into the now empty space of the bath, Fig. 2, and forms a comfortable seat, the interior of the bath being thus covered and hidden from view.
The chair-frame may be of wood or of metal and may be ornamented or constructed according to taste, and the means of suspension of the bath may be arranged to suit the ma terial or construction of the chair.
I claim- In a combined rocking-chair and bath, the combination with the chair-frame, of the tub or receptacle having a rounded bottom and fiat back, carried by the chair-frame,whereby the bath may be adjusted to different positions, means for holding said frame in adjusted position and a flexible seating adapted to be removably attached to the chair-frame substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
