SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,703, dated. September 12, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERBERT T. DYETT, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York,have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in FoldingMetal Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon which form part of this specification.

Figure 1 shows a perspective View of inyimproved folding bed in open position. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 shows details in the open positionof the bed. Fig. 4 shows in perspective the bed in folded position. Fig. 5 shows, on an enlarged scale, details of the bed in folded position.

Referring to the reference-figures in a more particular description of the device, 1 1 indicate the rear legs, which are extended upward and filled in with spindles, forming a back 2 and carrying at their upper ends a top 3 in the nature of a canopy.

4 4 indicate the front pair of legs, which are connected with the legs 1 1 by sets of bars, as shown, or in any other similar and suitable manner, the Whole forming the main frame. Between the legs 4, at a point somewhat elevated, there is provided a cross-bar or rod 5, secured in each of the legs 4 4.

The bed-frame consists of the long sections of side rails 6 6, united at the foot of the bed by a cross-bar 7, and the short sections of rails 8 8, united at the head of the bedby the crossbar 9. The side rail- sections 6 and 8 are hinged together at 10, and on the bed-frame is stretched a fabric 11, which may be a link fabric, as shown, or a woven-wire fabric or, for that matter, any other suitable fabric. The fabric 11, consisting of links, as shown, is connected in the construction, as shown, to the cross-bars 7 and 9, respectively, by short spiral springs 12. The foot end of the bedframe is supportedby a pair of legs 13 13, pivoted to the side rails at 14, and connected by bars 15 with the cross-bar 5, and the arrangement of the parts is such that when the bed is folded the legs will be folded, as will be noted by a comparison of the figures of the drawings, and when the bed is open the legs 13 will be extended into and held in operative position. Adjacent to their forward ends the long section 6 of the bed side rail is pivoted at 16 to the upper swinging ends of the fulcrum-links 17. These links stand above the bar 5 andare hinged or pivoted thereon. The forward end of the short sections 8 of the side rails are pivoted at 18 to the posts 1.

At a point substantially beneath the hinges or points 10 in the bed-bottom there is arranged a supplemental bar 19. This bar is held or supported by links 20 and 21, which extend downwardlyin a V shape when the bed is in open position and are both pivoted or hinged to the bar 19, and the link 20 is hinged or pivoted at its upper end at 22 to the long section 6 of the side rail, while the link 21 is hinged or pivoted at its upper end at 23 to the short section 8 of the side rail. The fabric on a line near the hinging-line of the bed is connected, by a series of short chains or other suitable connecting means 24, with the bar 19, which when the bed is in open position takes a position considerably below the plane of the fabric, and in open position the chains or connections 24 take an inclined position substantially parallel with the links 20.

It will be understood that the bed can be readily closed from the open position shown in Fig. l to the folded position shown in Fig.

4 and likewise at pleasure opened in the reverse order, and it will be noted that in open or extended position the fabric is tightly strained between the end bars 7 and 9, while in the closed position the main section of fabric corresponding with the long sections of the side rails is strained between the crossbar 7 and the bar 19, while the section of fabric corresponding with the short sections 8 of the side rails is somewhat slackened, as clearly appears in Fig. 5. -In closed position the main portion of the fabric under tension serves to hold the inclosed bedding in position and between it and the backing 2, while the bedding is supported at the lower end by the slack short section of fabric corresponding with the sections 8 of the side rails. The folding or closing movement of the side-rail sections 6 is limited or stopped when the side sections are substantially in a vertical position by the side of the link 20 coming into contact with the horizontal Web of the angle-iron of Which the side rails are formed, as clearly seen in Fig. 5. The swinging of the fulcrum-- links 17 moves the larger section of the mattress-frame inwardly toward the back of the bed when the same is folded and carries it out when the bed is open.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination in a folding bed of the main frame, a jointed mattress-frame hinged at one end to the main frame, swinging links on the main frame supporting the mattressframe near the joint or folding-line, a fabric and a supplemental bar supported from the mattress-frame at a point substantially beneath the folding-line and connections between said bar and fabric, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination in a folding bed of the main frame,the jointed mattress-frame hinged at one end to the main frame, fulcr'unvlinks 17 connecting the main frame and the mattress-frame near the joint in the mattressframe, the bar 19, the supporting- links 20 and 21 therefor pivoted to the mattress-frame at either side of the joint, the fabric and the connections between the bar 19 and the fabric, substantially as set forth.,

3. The combination in a folding bed of the main frame, the folding mattress-frame having jointed side rails consisting of sections 6 and S of unequal length, the short section 8 being pivoted to the main frame at 18, the fulcrum-links 17 connecting the long sections 6 to the main frame, the fabric, the bar 19, the links 20 and 21 pivoted to the long and short sections of the side rails, respectively, and supporting the bar 19 and the connections between the bar 19 and the fabric, substantially as set forth.

4. In a folding bed, the combination of the main frame, the mattress-frame having the jointed side rails consisting of sections 6 and S, the section 8 being pivoted to the main frame at 18, the links 17 connecting the sections 6 with the main frame, the links 20 and 21 also connecting the sections 6 and 8 of the side rails, and the links 20 acting as a stop to limit the folding of the mattress-frame, substantially as set forth.
