Beit known that I, WILLIAM MoRvILLE BATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Temporary Binder, of which' the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to temporary binders adapted for use in connection with various forms of books and tablets, such as ledgers, check-books, manifold copy-books, memorandum-books, calendar-blocks, theatrical date-books, drummers reminders, doctors prescriptions, business-cards, 85e.; and the object in view is to provide a simple and efficient construction and arrangement of parts whereby the engagement of loose leaves or sheets with the binder, and when desired the disengagement of the same therefrom, is facilitated, while the accidental disengagement of the same is prevented, and, furthermore, to provide a binder of such a construction that when desired it is adapted to perform the additional functionof a straight-edge to facilitate the tearing of a leaf from the binder.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. i

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book of the check type wherein is arranged a temporary binder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken centrally through the' binder and the contiguous portion of the hook-cover.v Fig. 3 is a detail .viewinperspective of the binder detached.- Fig. 4 is a plan view showing one method of engaging and disengaging the leaves. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a calendar or memorandumbook provided with a temporary binder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of a book of the ledger type wherein the side walls of the binder are omitted. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the detent-bearing tongue employed in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view to show the tongue-operating cam.

carried by the spring-tongues 10, said tongues being of a Width equal with the interval between the exposed surfaces of said cheeks and the detents being arranged to operate in terminal notches 16, formed in the cheeks. Also in the construction illustratedinFigs. l to 5, inclusive, the tongues 10 are formed as integral parts of a spring-plate 17, which is secured to the outer side of the holder, and the binder, consisting of the channeled holder and attached tongues, may be secured tothe cover 18 of a book by means of a fastening device 27, transversely engaging the holder and back of the cover.

In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4t, inclusive, the back is provided with parallel stiif strips 19, between which the holder is disposed, said strips being connected by a flexible portion 20 and having the movable portions of the cover hingedly mounted thereon, and fitting in transversely registering openings formed in the holder and said stiff lstrips 19 is a fastener of the split-key or double-tongue type similar to the Well-known McGill fastener. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 5 the holder, constructed identically as shown in IOO Figs. -1 to 4, inclusive, is secured to the cover, consisting of a back member 21 and a front member 22, by means of a centrallyopen swivel-eye 23, whereby to expose the faces of the leaves the front cover member may be swung laterally, as indicated in said Fig. 5. This arrangement of the holder embodying my invention is especially adapted for note and memorandum books, as indi-' cated.

In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a slightly modified construction and arrangement of the binder wherein the side cheeks are formed by sti strips 19, forming members of the cover or back, connected transversely by a suitable fastener 27a, and parallel with which the outwardly-yielding detents ll" operate, the detents in this construction, however, preferably consisting of pins connecting separated tongues l0, which for heavy books, such as ledgers', are preferably arranged in duplicate.

In applying or removing the leaves one of the detents may be displaced laterally by the exertionof manual force applied to the tongue by which it is carried, or, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the leaves may be pressed laterally to deect one of the tongues sufficiently to disengage the notches at the opposite edges of the leaves from the detent or to arrange said notches in alinement with said second detent. Furthermore, for heavy books wherein alarge number of leaves are secured in the binder a cam-roller 24 (see Figs. 1, 3, and S) may be mounted in the side cheeks of the holder in operative relation with each detent-bearing tongue, said roller or analogous trip device being provided at one end with a key-seat 25 for engagement by a key 26, which may be turned to deflect the adjacent tongue sufficiently to allow the engagement or disengagement of the leaves.

From the above description it will be seen that the binder embodying my invention is of simple construction and may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost, while the engagement of the detents thereof with the leaves necessitates 11o-preparation of the latter other than the notching of their side edges, and when the holder is used in connection with a memorandum or similar book the inner edges of the side cheeks constitute straight-edges,l

upon which the leaves confined in the holder may be successively torn Without disarranging the remaining leaves and without affecting the snug fitting of the inner end edges of the leaves in the'channel or space between the cheeks.

It will be understood, furthermore, that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. A temporary binder for leaves comprising parallel spaced cheeks of which the front edges form straight-edges, and of which the end edges are notched, and a spring-plate secured to and connecting said cheeks at their rear edges, and the ends of which are extended forward at the end edges of the cheeks to form spring-tongues, which are bent inward at their extremities to form terminal detents fitting in said notches of the cheeks, substantially as specified.

2. A temporary binder for leaves, having a seat for the reception of the end edges of leaves, yieldingly-supported detents arranged at the ends of the seat for engagement with notches in the side edges of seated leaves, and means for repressing said detents for disengaging them from the notches of the leaves, substantially as specified.

3. A temporary binder for leaves, having a channel or seat for the reception of the end edges of leaves, spring-actuated detents arranged at the ends of the channel or seat for engagement with notches in the side edges of the leaves, and key-actuated detent-repressing devices for disengaging said deten ts from the notches of the leaves, substantially as specified.

4. A temporary binder for leaves, having a channel or seat, spring-tongues mounted for swinging movement in a plane parallel with said channel and provided with detents for engaging notches in the side edges of the leaves, and cam-rollers arranged in operative relation with the tongues for deflecting them from their normal positions to withdraw the detents thereof from engagement with the leaves, substantially as specified.
