UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZEBULON OLIVER, OF TESLA, TEXAS.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,658, dated August 22, 1899.
, Application filed October 22, 1898. Serial No. 694,302. (No model.)
To all whom llt-may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ZEBULON OLIVER, of Tesla, in the county of Houston and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Truss, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in trusses for relieving or supporting hernia; and
the object is to provide a truss that may be Pin which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspectivev view of a truss embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of the truss-pad. Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof. Y
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a truss-pad consisting of a back piece 2, of wood or other rigid material, and a facing 3, of a substance capable of slightly softening under the inuence of body heat. I find wax, especially beeswax, a substance well suited for the facing. The substance may be held securely in connection with the back piece by pressing a portion into an annular channel 4. formed in the back piece.
The facing has an annular channel 5 formed in it, from which upon pressing the pad to the body a sufficient amont of air will be exhausted to hold the pad sufficiently tight to prevent its slipping.
The pad lis adj ustably mounted on the bowspring 6 by means of a loop on the pad, through which the spring passes, and a set-screw, which passes through the loop and bears upon the spring. If found necessary, another pad may be adjustably mounted on the spring, as indicated by the dotted lines at az. On the op posite end of the spring is secured a supporting-pad 7, and also adjustably mounted on the spring is another supporting-pad 8. The form of the spring permits of a person using the pad on either side, or one may be used on each side, and obviously this spring will not have the irritating effect of a belt.
I have found that the facing material will soften somewhat from body heat, but will not be melted; neither will it stick to or discolor the body of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y l A truss-pad, comprising a back piece haw ing a peripheral channel, a waxy substance extended over the inner surface of the back piece, said substance having formed in the face thereof an annular channel and also having a central projection, said substance fur ther being extended into the channel of the back piece, and a loop on the back piece for receiving a supporting device, substantially as specified.
ZEBULON OLIVER.
