HOLDER FOR PENCILS.
SPECIFICATIQN forming art Of Letters Patent NO. 631,644, dated August 22, 1899. Application fiIedDecemheI 24,1898. $erial No. 700,251; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF KLEIN, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York andYState of New York, have invented a new and Improved Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to holders for pencils and other writing implements and used on pocket memorandum-books, tablets, dancecards, and like articles; and the object of the invention is to provide a new and improved holder arranged to securely hold a pencil or like writing implement securely in place when not in use to guard against loss and to permit the user to readily remove the implement from the holder when it is desired to employ it for its legitimate purposes.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied on a memorandumbook and with the pencil shown detached. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same with the pencil in'position, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section in part of the pencil and book, showing the securin g device for the pencil.
The improved holder illustrated in the drawings isarranged on a memorandum or note book having the usual covers A, the flexible back A, and the leaves or signatures A In the back A, between the latter and the back of the leaves or signatures A and preferably near the upper end of the notebook, is secureda nut 13, preferably made tubular and having prongs B at the upper end adapted to be pressed into the covers A, so as to hold the nut securely in position on the memorandum-book to prevent it from turning. In the nut B is adapted to screw a screw 0, preferably made tubular and secured to one end of a pencil or other writing implement D, the screw being preferably secured to the pencil by screwing it on the same, but
other suitable means may be employed to securely fasten the screw in position.
On the upper end of the screw 0 is formed a head 0 for limiting the inward screwing movement of the screw in the nut, said bead O abutting against the upper end of the nut after the screw is screwed down in the nut, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. From the bead 0 projects integrally a-handle O adapted to be taken hold of by the operator to conveniently turn the screw and pencil, so as to screw the screw in or out of the nut B, the handle also forming a cap for the tubular screw.
Now it will be seen that by the arrange ment described the operator is enabled to readily insert the pencil D in the tubular nut B and pass the pencil down in the space between the back A and the back of the leaves and signatures,A to finally bring the lower end of the screw in engagement with the nut B, so that when the operator now turns the handle C the screw screws, in the nut until the bead C abuts against theupper end of the nut. The pencil is now securely held in position in the note-book and is not liable to drop out, and when it is desired to make use of the pencil the operator by simply turning the handle (1 in an opposite direction readily unscrews the screw 0 from the nut to finally lift the pencil from the. note-book for use in the usual manner.
It is understood from the foregoing that the device is only shown applied to a notebook at the back thereof; but it is evident that it can be readily applied to other portions of the article on which it is used. For instance, on dance-cards the nut is secured in a loop to a leaf of the card, or on the memorandum-books the nut is secured in the loop atthe opposite side of the leaf near the forward end, and the screw can be arranged near the middle of the writing implement, if desired.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent i 1. The combination with a memorandumbook provided with a space between the back of its covers and the back of the leaves, of a nut in said space with its outer end flush with the ends of the covers, said nut being provided at its outer ends with prongs projecting parallel with the body of the nut and,
a tubular screw adapted to be screwed onto the end of a pencil or the like and into the said nut, said screw being provided at its outer end with a cap forming a handle and between the cap and screw portion with a bead forming a stop to limit the inward movement of the screw in the nut, substantially 20 as described.
ADOLF KLEIN.
