Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
M. SALYARDS, OF TROY GROVE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEM ENT IN FENCE-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 63,103, dated March 19, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. L. SALYARDs, of Troy Grove, in the county of La Salle, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact de` scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a fence-gate in such a manner that a man driving a team need not come down to open the gate, but, on the contrary, can, from his position on the wagon or on horseback, open` the gate by pulling a rope, and, after having passed through, close it again by the same process.
My invention also consists in constructing said fence-gate in a novel manner, .whereby it is made double, an d both parts moving at the same time and by the same operation.
Figures l and 2 are vertical plans. Fig. 3 is a horizontal plan enlarged. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a b. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through c d.
I construct a series of double posts, A AA A, planted into the ground in such a manner as to leave between the two inner ones the space which itis desired the opening of the gate shall be. These posts A A A A are made double, for the purpose of leaving a space for the gates B B to slide in. They are also provided, below and near the ground, with a se ries of rollers, C C O C, on which the gates B B roll in and out. Directly in the opening or passage-way, and between the two gates B B, is made a communication of ropes, D D, fastened alternately to one gate, at the point E, then passing around a roller, O, then fastened to the other gate at the point F. This arrangement of the ropes D D has for'eft'ect that the moving of one of the gates B B will always cause the moving of the opposite gate in the opposite direction. Two posts, G G, are planted at such distances from the gate that a man sitting on a wagon can reach the ropes H H and pull either one of said ropes, thus opening the gates B B. After having passed through, said'person, by pulling either one of the ropes I I, can close the gates B B effectively. 1
The' ropes D D are protected from the B B, substantially as and for the purpose de- A scribed.
3. The posts G G and weights M M M M, in combination with the gates B B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The rollers O C G C, in combination with the gates B B, substantially as and forthe purpose described in the foregoing speciication.
M. L. SALYARDS.
