(Application filed. Mar. 17, 1899.) (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. BROWN, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
ERAS ER ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..630,f774, dated August 8, 1899.
Application filed March 17,1899- Serial No. 709,472. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT B. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have in vented a new and usefulEraser Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an eraser attachment, and has for its object to provide a retracting-spring,whereby the eraser after use may be automatically returned to a fixed place, thus avoiding confusion or delay due to concealment or displacement of the eraser when used in connection with a type-writing machine.
With these objects in view the invention consists of the erasing attachment, as particularly specified in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the attachment. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of a horizontal section. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the device.
Similar letters of reference designate the same parts in the several figures.
a represents an ordinary circular eraser suitably secured to the flexible connection 0.
b represents a narrow flat volute'sprihg,
and (1 represents a drum surrounding the spring and in the same plane therewith, around which is coiled the connection 0.
6 represents a casing closely fitting the spring and provided with a flat side f, having rigid ear or ears 9 for securing the same to the type-writing machine. These ears are shown as perforated at h for receiving a fas- 35 tening-screw.
The operation of the device is obvious. The attachment is secured by the ear to the type-writing machine. The eraser can then be carried at any time to the erasing-point 4c and after use released, when the return spring b will always return the eraser to its normal position, where it can be found.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An eraser attachment for type-writing machines consisting of a narrow, fiat, volute spring, a narrow casing fitting the same and having a fiat side, a rigid ear in line with the flat side of the casing for securing the device 50 to a type-writing machine, and a flexible connection coiled in the plane of the spring for securing the eraser, all substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 55 in presence of two witnesses.
