To all whom it may concei ma Be it known that LH NRY W. (Journal), a citizen of the United States, residing at ymore, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful File, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to, files adapted for papers, letters, bills, &c., and particularly designed for use in connection with railroad accounts, to hold, in addition to letters "and bills, orders and papers giving rates of different kinds of freight and merchandise, invoices, general instructions, 850.; and the object of the invention is to provide a file wherein the papers are inclosed and concealed to protect them from accumulations of dust, &c., the papers relating to any desired subject being readily accessible.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof ,will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the file-case open. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 isa detail View in perspective of the file-pin holding and securing plate detached. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the indexcard holders. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view to show the means whereby the swiveledele- .ments of the file-pins are mounted upon the supporting plate.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The file embodying my invention consists, essentially, of a base 1, from which rise front and rear side walls 2 and 3 and end walls 4, the end and rear walls being preferably fixed, and a lid or cover 5, which is threaded and movable upon the arched filing-pins 6 and is flanged and rabbeted to engage the upper edges of the side and end walls. The front or outer side wall 2, or that which is remote from the file-pins, is preferably hinged at its lower edge to the-base or bottom of the case to fold outwardly, the same-being secured in its normal or closed position when the lid or cover is in place by means of the overlapping flanges of said lid or cover. Also in practice I preferably employ front and rear catches 7, arranged upon the side walls to engage the contiguous edges of the lid or cover, said catchesbeing adapted for disengagement by pressure to facilitate the opening of the case.

The file-pins, of which two are preferably employed, consist of stationary or impaling members 6, arranged within the space inclosed by the walls of the case, and parallel with and adjacent to the rear wall are movable or arched members 6", of which the shanks are swiveled to provide forturning the arched extremities thereof laterally, whereby papers engaged with the stationary or impaling members may be removed. The extremities of the swiveled or movable members are provided with sockets to receive the points of the stationary or impaling members.

In practice the cases may be made of different materials to suit the uses to which they may be applied or the durability which they must havein order to be serviceable; but I prefer in, the attachment of the file-pins to employ a skeleton plate 8, secured to the base or bottom of the case and having forwardlyextending arms 9, from which the stationary or impaling members of the file-pins rise through the base or bottom of the box, and rearwardly-extending arms 10,upon which the shanks of the arched or movable members of the file-pins are swiveled.

In the construction illustrated the shanks of the arched or movable members of the filepins are shouldered to bear upon the upper surface of the plate, and the reducedIextremities of said shanks extend through suitable bearings in the plate and are engaged by screws 11.

Arranged upon the file-pins are movable partitions or dividingsheets 12, between which andeither loose or engaged with the file-pins are arranged the papers which are in the case, said partitions or sheets serving to separate groups of papers and being preferably provided with index characters,whereby they constitute indexing-sheets.
