SHUTTLE FOR EMBROIDERING-MACHINE S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,278, dated July 18, 1899.
Application filed July 23, 18 93.
To all whom it may concern.-
chines, (for which I have applied for a patent in Switzerland on the 29th of March, 1898; in Germany on the 9th of J une, 1898; in Austria on the 10th of June, 1898; in France on the 13th of June, 1898, and in Great Britain on the 18th of June, 1898,) of which the followin g is a specification. I
This-invention relates to shuttlesfor embroidering-machines; and it has for its object a construction whereby a bobbin maybe mechanically inserted and the bobbin-thread first threaded under the tension-spring and then through the thread-eye in the shuttlewall, for instance, by mechanism shown and described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 686,724, filed July 23, 1898, wherein means are provided for inserting bobbins in closed shuttles fed to mechanism operating to first open the shuttle, then insert the bobbin, close the shuttle, carry the shuttle-thread under the tension-spring on the shuttle-cover, and then thread said-thread through an eye in the shuttle-wall.
In the accompanying drawings,'Figures l and 2 show a shuttle constructed in accordance with my invention 'by a side elevation and top plan view, respectively.
The shuttle a in its general construction is the sameoas those generally used in embroidering-machines, itscover a being hinged to a pintle b at the butt or heel of the shuttle and engages a notch or catch at the nose end of the shuttle. In order to adapt the cover to be raised mechanically, it is recessed at 0 near the nose of the shuttle and in rear of the bobbin-thread slot 0 usually provided erial No. 686,723. (No model.)
and terminates in an eye close to the tensionspring 6 on said cover.
In the mechanism described in my application for patent above referred to the bobbinthread is threaded through the thread-eye in one of the walls of the shuttle-"J. e., in the wall opposite to that from which the threadslot 0 extendsby means of a hook which moves through the thread-eye and cover after the bobbin-thread d has been drawn under the tension-spring e and is held taut in a position for the hook to seize it. To this end the thread-eye has the form of a vertical slot '1, Fig. 1, and the cover 0 is cut away to form a recess 0 for the passage of the threadinghook. It is obvious, however, that the shuttles need not necessarily be mechanically 6o opened in order to enable mechanism for inserting the bobbins, drawing the thread under the tension-spring, and then threading it through the thread-slot f to perform its work, as this opening of the shuttles may be performed by hand, in which case the recess 0 in the shuttle-cover can be dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' A shuttle for embrcidering-machines having in one of its side walls a thread-slot at .right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shuttle and of a length sufficient for the pas sage therethrough of a threading hook, in combination with a shuttle-cover provided with a recess 0' in its edge proximate to the slotted wall for the passage therethrough of
